Would you have reestablished the AT-fields?

Postby consrv4us » Thu Sep 07, 2006 6:32 pm

Sometimes I wonder if Shinji's desicion to discontinue the human

instrumentality project was the best choice. I mean there is a real upside

to the evolution that the SEELE people envisioned.

One, there would be no more suffering.

Two, everybody would be equal once and for all.

Three, lastly without the dependency on the protien based bodies of our

physical self the survival of humanity itself would almost be ensured.

Yes, but you lose the freedom of being an individual.

In short, would you give up your freedom to think for yourself to live forever?

Becoming a Borg drone offers the same benefits, but would you consider that a good thing?

I wouldn't; their network security sucks and the lag times are awful. No creativity, either.

I probably wouldn't. Eternal life in a world of my own creation sounds better.

Nah. I would. I'd rather die than lose the ability to think for myself.

i agree, the whole "I think, therefore I am" thing gets me. I like my semi-sane thoughts.

I think I'll set off a shotgun in my mouth. That way there will be no more suffering.

That's basically what I think of Instrumentality. It's a coward's escape from life's difficulties.

Let me guess: there'd be a nice set of "twin peaks" right in front of your house, right? :P

I'll take complementation with the Fruit of Life, but not with every single goddam human soul on the planet. Homogenous metabiological blob = teh lam0rz. If I want to go to a similar place, I'll become a monk and live in the mountains until I achieve nirvana, or whatever.

Best way to ensure continued existence of human life? Pack up Yui with some syringes and send her on her way.

- Suffering is the road to wisdom. Only the weak fear pain, and thus should either perish, or learn to face the realities they live in. And yay for Darwin. :D :P

- Yes, 0=0. Big deal. :P

- I don't want to live without eating. I love my stomack. And also I have no intention to remain a virgin... :P :D And in that case I wouldn't be able to honor the ladies for being the biggest blessing (and curse :P (those who get offended deserve it)) of men. Not to mention the visual side of things... a world without eyes, hair, skin, hands, stomach, tongue, throat, Quake III, anime, people (especially women, though not only for that :D) food (mum is the best cook on Earth :D) and Tonic? Kinda like Hell, I'd say...

@Timstuff
And don't forget that cute red and white striped swim-suit... :P :D

Along with no more love, pleasure, happines, hope, or any other emotion. That would kind of suck in my opinion. I would come back in a heartbeat.

I second that. That kind of existence would be like 'you're blind so you can't see bad things'. It's not you dont feel suffering, you just don't feel.

Instrumentality as shown was much more like Sartre's Inferno. The discussion seems to have drifted to something much closer to the Buddhist idea of Nirvana (or the CoE latest take on Hell).

I think perspectives change with age...this snatch from an (unfinished) sf story of mine is apposite. The character is about the age I was when I wrote the piece, earlier this decade, and reflected some of my own leanings:

I wrote:While she set to work on the plateful, tending to the remaining demand of the meat on her conscious activity, she felt that she would be happy to be liberated from the tyranny of guts and bladder and appetites, in some angelic state of upload - cleaner, better, upgraded.

She must, she reflected, be getting old. Thinking back, she remembered when - and it must have been as a teenager, she had shared the distaste of the characters in Niven's Protector at the concept of trading the physical capacity for sex to receive enhanced intelligence and much extended lifespan. Now, she would be happy to transcend much more of her biological frame for the same outcome.

How exactly do you achieve complementation (i.e. "the interfusion of souls") with an organ? =P

By complementing my Fruit of Knowledge with it, of course.

I don't understand. Complementation is all about filling the gaps in people's minds/hearts by fusing their souls together. What you're thinking of (FoL + FoK) is more like apotheosis.

I'm using the word a different way intentionally to trick you. But seriously, that's what hokan literally means: "complement". FoL and FoK are complementary. So, from a certain point of view, acquiring both is another form of complementation. Is it Complementation ®? Well... I dunno. I don't see why there can't be more than one possibility.

Legend of the Past wrote:So Rachel would basically like to become a SoL. Intresting choice...

Both Fruits =/= SoL, but in theory one could graduate from a puny mortal into something like an Apostle, but "better". Sounds like a rather more interesting form of ascension than being squashed into a hive mind and ceasing to exist.
