My impression was that this took place some time after the manga. I don't think I'll continue with it, though; from the way supposedly competent people keep getting killed by the bugs it looks like this is gonna be a "humanity is inferior" type of show, and I just can't get into those.

Yes, I know. You thought it would be something about Asuka. You're such idiots.

Revolutionary Girl Utena (first Impressions):

Three Episodes In:
Image

Given all the Hype on the forum. I decided to cash in my Man Card and watch the first Few Episodes of Utena.

Keep in mind me watching a Magical Girl Anime is like a flabby dude running a marathon.

Needless to say I'm confused. . . .Where is this set? Japan? Magical girl Land? Magic clearly exists, as do weird monkey-mouse things. but so do Samurai Katanas and Sailor Uniforms. The setting isn't really dwelt upon. Its a fantasy universe, there's magic, apparently that all you need to know. So far, there isn't much world building.

Utena the character isn't terrible, and I'm willing to give the show a pass because its the first few episodes. But Imma be blunt.

Shes kind've a Mary Sue. The paragon girl who is perfect at anything and everything the boys can do. Which, maybe was new at the time, but now every other female character is like that. . .

Then of course there is Anthy poor victimized Anthy, who clearly has some darker part to play in whatever end of the world plan is happening on the part of the student council.
I'm confused. . . Is Utena meant to be a Kaworu Expy and Anthy the Shinji Expy? Usually its the other way around.

Whats up with the Rose Vision anyway?

Since I already Cashed In my Man-card. . .

While flamboyant, Utena is so highly regarded there's no need to worry about your "man card" while watching it. The stock footage might bother you though (it did me on my first run-through).

Oh goodie! Another first time Utena watcher :p

@Ray While there isn't much world building as of yet (10 episodes in), there is some mystery to a certain part of the setting the characters are unsure of themselves, so it will probably play a major role later on. The academy itself probably just adds to the nod of being rooted in a magical girl anime, so I don't think major importance is placed on it (aside from the mystery of that certain place...)

Also, maybe because I am ahead of you, I don't get much Kaworu/Shinji vibes from that duo tbh.

Of course, that's why we spend so much time trying to understand ourselves and others.
That's what makes life so interesting."

In school, that bubble in which we spend our adolescent years, separated from the cares of the real world.

Is Utena meant to be a Kaworu Expy and Anthy the Shinji Expy?
Kaworu is an Ikuni expy.

It was made by Gainax between FLCL and Diebuster, and is the one that never gets mentioned.

I always thought that Ugly Yet Beautiful World was the "unmentionable" one. Melody of Oblivion is actually not so bad compared to that show. There definitely seem to be some overly confusing bits to it if I can recall, but it wasn't a terrible show.

Made "by J.C.Staff, with some involvement from Gainax" is what I read - not quite the same, really.

The anime's I watched growing up were usually in the Vein of Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun, and Champloo. Sort've more 'real looking' palettes, with 'Manly men and Womanly women' as main characters. More grounded in a reality and less dreamy and 'cartoony-looking'.

Having said that I'll keep up with Utena. Luckily Manga Entertainment made the whole thing available for free on their Youtube Channel. So there's that.

Melody of Oblivion was an Enokido show, along with FLCL (that came before) and Diebuster (that came after). But it was directed by someone outside of the GAINAX circle.

Growing up everyone wanted to be Goku. I wanted to be Spike Spiegel.

Take that as you will

That's nice and all, but now just do me the favour and watch this series. Try to immerse yourself into it. It has 39 Episodes, so it builds slowly. But you certainly won't regret it. I don't know of one person who has watched it all the way through does not regard Utena in one way or another.

And then, watch Monster.

That said, Autumn-season started. I'm going to watch:
Gundam G
Already posted in the Gundam thread, so far I love this frantic show!
Psycho-Pass 2
I don't know, so far I was kind of underwhelmed. But it was not bad, I'll stick with it, and see, where it goes. This better be awesome, because you don't just destroy that lovely first season, I.G.!
Parasyte
Finally Madhouse has brought up its A-game again. Cool premise, great directing, awesome animation… I really enjoy it so far. I also like the dub step, didn’t expect it in this kind of series, but it only adds to the oddness of it all.

and of course, Mushi-shi Zoku-Shou.

Riiiight.

Anyway, I'm doing some web-trawling and am tracking down Kite, Mezzo Forte, Angel Cop and Mad Bull 34.

Wish me luck.

Mezzo Forte isn't a masterpiece by any standards, but it's definitely a fun watch on the first go-around.
