Let me clarify. Its not that the movie is popular in China that makes me mad. It's the fact that studios are actively making movies FOR China in an attempt to supplement their less than spectacular box office returns. Studios are so desperate for a movie to make back its money that they are actively self censoring themselves to appeal to the Chinese market. and the Communist censors are very picky about what is allowed to show in China.

There tend to be two extremes, souless blockbusters where a lot of crap blows up but aren't at all good movies, or films that can be interpreted as being propaganda for communism.

Furthermore If a movie is interpreted as having an Anti China, or anti communist slant, the censors refuse to Showcase it. and anything the director and actors associated with the film do and/or star in is banned from China forever.

Case in point Brad Pitt STILL isn't allowed to even set foot in China because he starred in "7 Years In Tibet' Back in the 90's.

Japanese Media, especially Anime, isn't held to the same standard of censorship that western media is, because Japan writes for Japanese audience.

Your reaction is a bit histrionic to be honest. There are still plenty of western movies made that aren't intended to be blockbusters and thus aren't made with the Chinese box office in mind. Also, not defending the Chinese government's policies, but there are plenty of other countries that are either almost as bad, just as bad, or even worse in humanitarian terms so singling them out seems a bit prejudiced especially since many of these same countries are also exploited by the first world for electronics and energy resources. And if you're going to boycott movies made in the US or Europe because they might appeal to a Chinese audience and you're opposed to the Chinese, I'd like to know how you justify using Apple products or wearing Levi's.

Touche. . . but almost everything made today has something from China in it. Its inescapable. I'm not opposed to the Chinese people, just the Chinese Government and the Censors. . . and the lengths Hollywood goes to appease them.

This is getting a bit OT so I'll get us back.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is a MUST see. Easily the best animated film of 2014 bar none.

The Wolverine for the second time. FavoriteX-men related film I've seen, even though I still haven't seen the newest one. I could have done without having to read the movie but that's nothing.

My real complaint is the Silver Samurai was heavily hyped but the fight was less than impressive. Overall though it was a good movie with great plot and acting.

A solid 8/10

The Raid 2: Berandal

Freakin' awesome. Even more awesome than the first one, and I loved the first one. The fighting scenes are spectacular. I don't think any of them topped the Mad Dog fight though. But there is more focus on the plot here than in the first one, and it's the better for it.

Snowpiercer

Also freakin' awesome. And not only is it a great action thriller, it's also a film that respects the audience's intelligence. I suspect that those paying attention to North Korea as it rots under its tyrannical regime will have a lot to say about Snowpiercer, though it won't detract from the film if you haven't. Just know that it's a very complex film that can be enjoyed superficially as well as intellectually. It's the kind of movie I want to see being made more often. I'll have to read the source material at some point.

The Act of Killing, a tremendously powerful documentary on the atrocities of the Indonesian coup of the 1960's as proudly (at first...) told and reenacted by 'gangsters' now famous, celebrated as national heroes even, for their participation in the mass murder of communists, Chinese refugees, other suspected dissidents or simply anyone who didn't bow to their authority and pay bribes to stay alive. Simply astounding film.

Tamako in Moratorium: a bit short, being that it’s a slice-of-life film; there are also funny moments and quotable soundbites. Not for everyone, but it’s a light film that should be a hit for those who are stuck with their parents after college.

Edge of Tomorrow, AKA All you Need is Kill

Man, this movie's really good, solid action, bit of morbid humour (a lot of morbid humour), guns, mech suits, aliens, blue glowy stuff, Emily Blunt, Tom Cruise.

8/10 would see again.

Touch of Evil

The last great film noir and the best B-Movie ever made, Orson Welles is incredible both as an actor and as a director.

22 Jump Street. Solid movie, very funny, and the self-aware nature of it being a sequel helped.

Seen Snowpiercer twice this week on the big screen & it's just wonderful! Because the Weinstein's are jerks though the film is being dumped on Video On Demand (goes online today, Friday July 11) so if it's not playing anywhere near you support the filmmakers & rent it. Watch it. Love it.

Or just pirate it & be a jerk cause I know it's been online for over a year. But don't.

P.S. Also been watching a lot of Akira Kurosawa. The man just has this predictable tendency to make masterpieces. :)

I recently saw the Live action Rurouni Kenshin movie, holy crud this movie is awesome! It's Kenshin! I LOVE Kenshin! I love the Anime, I love the Manga, I loved the Trust and Betrayal OVA, and the movie is the best of all three wrapped into one with none of the bad.

A-list casting, decent Comedic relief, and beautiful John Woo level Fight Choreography that puts most American films to shame. If you can get it watch it!

Cloud Atlas - A well done masterpiece of existential sci-fi/drama by the Wachowskis. Anything done by them, even the Matrix sequels and Speed Racer, gets rave points by me for being different from the norm. My favorite story to follow was Sonmi's and it's futuristic world complete with action sequences that dazzle didn't disappoint.

American hustle
Really liked the film + I was pretty surprised to read so many negative receptions that the audience gave to this film, did they dislike it because it didn't fulfill their expectations or something?

Frozen

Best movie about homosexuality since X-men.
Among the people who use the Internet, many are obtuse. Because they are locked in their rooms, they hang on to that vision which is spreading across the world. But this does not go beyond mere ‘data’. Data without analysis [thinking], which makes you think that you know everything. This complacency is nothing but a trap. Moreover, the sense of values that counters this notion is paralyzed by it.

And so we arrive at demagogy. - Hideaki Anno, 1996

Well done? . . .hoo boy. Where do I begin?

It wasn't. . .terrible. . . but it could have been a LOT better. I wanted to like it I really did. But there was just so much altered in the adaptation, and not to mention the makeup was. . .distracting to say the least. But I suppose its better to be an ambitious failure than an intentional one, right?

Yeah. . . listen just check this out. This man is an expert in film, and loves talking about his movies. he discusses Cloud Atlas in a Film School 101 style talk about adaptations and where the film succeeded and failed as one. It's basically an Appreciation of Cinema Class you can just watch. He sums up the films successes ad failings better than I ever could.

One thing I'll say the Wachowskis have going for them is that they're willing to try something different. While most Filmmakers are usually content to just wallow in the same tried and true formula like Bay, at least the Wachowskis are willing to push borders, and take risks where some filmmakers just aren't willing to these days. True they may not always succeed, but if they are at least willing to keep trying something different, I think they'll strike gold again eventually.
