FML General Thread [6]

My daily dosis of FML: I am still hunting my 2 missing credit points for my bachelor. Deadline for the certificate is friday. Secretary is too stupid to use the computer system for credit points and the examination office ladies are either sick and not at work or lazy and unfriendly and closing the office at 12 am anyway. "Come again tomorrow!" "No, we don't know if we can give you the confirmation letter in time." Me and the uni-people right now:
I apologize for any grammar mistakes, as I am not a native speaker.
Wait, you had a root canal before you had your wisdom teeth pulled? I've never even heard of that happening.
Yeah I pretty much didn't take care of my teeth for the first 20 years of my life. Hardly ever saw a dentist. Then one day I woke up to unbearable pain, saw a dentist, had a root canal. Ever since I've tried to undo all the damage I did during my teens.
It's difficult in times like these; ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality.
It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical.
Yet I cling to them because I believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.

You're penetrating the bureaucracy! Universities suck, everything takes at least three tress worth of paper, and that's if, if they actually respond to you.

It's from The Incredibles. If you haven't seen it, it's very much worth a watch.

I'm not sure how to understand this sentence. Is it a poke at the British dental system or something?

I've noticed over the past few months looking at various posts in various threads on this forum, there are a significant amount of techincal matters, primarily about computers or matters relating to them, being discussed by a healthy amount of the forum regulars. There are very few things in these posts that appear to be knowledge understood only by people with advanced training. The FML part of this is that most of the time, I do not understand what any of you are talking about. Reading what is in the posts seem like gibberish to me. I'm starting to get the feeling that I am computer illiterate. And the most frustrating part of it is I don't know how to change the situation. I'm willing to learn, but I don't know where to start. Some people would say google it, but I wouldn't know what search criteria to use.

I hate this feeling in general. It's such a strange form of helplessness.

As it was organized 40+ years ago, yes. In those days, dentists got reimbursed through the NHS at piecework rates, so the more they drilled, the more they were paid -- no matter how much I cleaned my teeth and abstained from sweets, every six months, it was another couple of huge fillings.

How horrible...
Funny that we should be talking about dentistry when I just had a dental visit today. My story's an RML though, or would be if it were not so routine: a clean bill of health.
However, I have had one major dental event in my life (as in dentist and not orthodontist -- now that is a major tooth-related event in my life, or series thereof), and as I remember my current dentist describing it, it seemed to be a result of some incompetence on my previous dentist's part.
I don't really know the details -- this stuff is all voodoo to me. But apparently something was done to protect my teeth, and my prior dentist apparently screwed up, so one day a few years ago I went in for a routine exam only to find myself having major work done on me very suddenly and with no real idea of what was going on. It was a pretty scary episode, and in the depths of a kind of temporary psychosis I fixated on Kaworu (and his smile) the way someone might pray to Jesus or God in such a moment. I never really developed a solid idea of what that event was all about or what was done to the tooth (my rearmost upper left molar), but it was the single largest dental event of my life and nothing of such significance has happened before or since.
Quick research leads me to believe that it has something to do with dental sealants. The term sounds vaguely familiar as well.
There was one other thing that happened too, that I still don't understand. One time when I had my teeth cleaned (before this more major dental event), the dentist's scraper thingamajig caught on something so they did some work. I left the office with the impression that I'd had something less than a cavity, but I don't know if that's just me rationalizing it after the fact because I (used to be able to) take such pride in being able to say that I've never had a cavity. I still don't know if I can say that; I'm still not entirely sure what they did.
Do I have a filling now? Maybe two? I honestly have no idea. Every time I think about it it bothers me, though, for some reason. It's like my grades -- I'm bothered by not having a perfect score. I must be perfect, dammit, or my ego goes all to hell!

Heh! My first programming job was writing the charging program for a dentistry practice that had bought a computer system - including a way of displaying a diagram of the teeth on a character-only vdu (the only sort in 1971, of course)

In my frantic franticness to not miss my flight, I arrived at my gate two hours early. I completely forgot that TIA is completely empty until about 11:00. As much as I love travelling, I hate flying. I'm a tall person (190 cm) and planes are uncomfortable. Not to mention two stops. First in Charlotte, the second in Washington DC, then I fly to Zürich. That last hop is going to be the worst. International coach is painful. Fortunately, I have Mirai Nikki on my netbook (4 hour anime-watching battery life, I've tested it), lots of ibuprofen and benadryl. I'll be drugged and anime'd up when I arrive.

Ugh, that's shitty, mate. Sorry to hear about that crap.
Shin Evangelion brought me back, five long years later.

I don't know if anyone here plays Ogame, but last night my entire fleet and defense network got crashed by an extremely high-level bandit... while I was asleep. Months of work, gone. Ragequit pending at this time.
Doesn't help that this was one of my escapes from things that are actually FML-worthy. Nothing like fictional problems to take your mind off of real ones.

Unfamiliar with the game but a persistent world can be a quite alluring factor of games, a la Eve. Depends on how it's handled/works though.
