Shinji is a XTC fan?!

I noticed in one of the episodes that Shinji has a logo of the band XTC on his T Shirt at the back of his neck. I wonder if that was in the storyboards or if one the animaters was a XTC fan and put it in for a laugh!

Did anyone else notice this?!?

I don't think Shinji has anything t odo with cars.
But Sadamoto is.

Car designs? I meant the pop group XTC. Thier early logo (late 70s early80s) pops up on Shinjis t shirt at one point.

XTC is also a term for the drug, "ecstasy."
The purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure poor reasoning, and inhibit clarity. With a little practice, writing can be an intimidating and impenetrable fog!

Interesting. I assumed that the XTC was a reference to something, but I never took the time to look into it. Shinji loves his cheesy J-Pop.

Ew, god. I never would have noticed that.
Actually, one of my friends mentioned something like that when I was watching Eva, (She's into the 80's pop thing) but I had absolutely no clue what she was talking about.
We'll see whachu' got.

I had a theory once that this shirt might have been one of Misato's that she gave to him on his first night in Tokyo-3. It is after all, WAY to big for Shinji. Perhaps it was an old boyfriends or something.

Is this the sort of overanalysis NGE fans are said to be guilty of?

I was a theory. The shirt was really big after all.

But hey, isn't overanalysing what Eva fandom is all about? I mean, if we were the types to just accept things, we'd hardly be here 8+ years after the fact, still debating what the hell this whole series is about.

Does that mean your life was hypothetical?

The shirt was really big after all.

And kids never, ever wear loose clothing in real life, as we all know.

I like to overanalyze with the best of them, although I must say that this is one case where looking harder will yield absolutely nothing meaningful in any way.

Your right of course.

What drew me to Shinji's wearing of the shirt was the contridiction between him wearing an oversized shirt and his compulsive neat freak nature. Perhaps the shirt is his minds little way of breaking free every once in a while from its self imposed repression....

Or he just likes wearing baggy T-shirts. I like wearing baggy T-shirts too.

To be fair, many of the themes XTC discuss in their songs appear in Eva.

As a quick trip to Google trends will make clear, Dear God was only popular in the American territories - indeed the only country in the grip of fanatical sectarianism and supernatural delusion. More to the point, the only entry on the evawiki links to a youtube of the song 'Making Plans for Nigel' (that's been taken down since) - for which they're far better known in their native UK:

seminal British '70s New Wave rock wrote: WE'RE ONLY MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL
WE ONLY WANT WHAT'S BEST FOR HIM
WE'RE ONLY MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL
NIGEL JUST NEEDS THAT HELPING HAND
...
WE'RE ONLY MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL
HE HAS THIS FUTURE IN-A BRITISH STEEL
WE'RE ONLY MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL
NIGEL'S WHOLE FUTURE IS AS GOOD AS SEALED"

The song has that rich conspiracist vibe to it dating - it almost seems from a different geological era - when the post-war industrial settlement shepherded its people into consumerism and complacency in exchange for pliant labour in key strategic industries. And know the Thatcherite devastation has retreated and left an angry, bitter and delusional nation in its place. Now we exchange surveillance for colonialism, racism and war. And if the electorate says they're happy, they must happy, they must be happy with this world.

Which is more relevant to Japanese animators I don't know.
