Suggestive angles, redundant shots of too-much-flesh/underwear and stuff like that. Think of how often we get accidental groping, touching and flashing in anime. See a hand, see a tit close by, and rest assured they'll meet up soon enough.
Not sure that has a lot to do with pleasing the fans, but it's a stupid fucking joke we all grew sick of in the 1900s, and I'd like to bring it to attention.

Just take a look in episode 2 when Misato and Shinji are at the dinnertable, and how when Misato leans over the table she gets a camera right up her asshole.

As for nudity in Evangelion, it seems to come in three varieties.

A) To emphesise humiliation

B) To heighten the disturbing aspect of a scene

C) Fanservice

When you see the tank full of naked Rei clones, that's B. When Ritsuko is naked and being interrogated by SEELE, that's A. When Misato is in the bathtub, that's C. When Asuka is naked and dying in the bathtub, that's A. When Shinji falls ontop of Rei in her apartment, it's C. When Asuka and Misato are at the hotsprings, that's C. I could go on all day...

So yes, there is fanservice in Evangelion.

Fan service is not a bad thing; it gives your brain a little time to relax until the real stuff comes. Until FS is kept under control, I have no problem with it. NGE has this good balance. Sailor Moon was the other end of the rope: the whole series is a fan service. Yuck. Though it was funny at times... at times... :P

I agree. Fanservice doesn't have to be a bad thing, and for the most part I think NGE finds a good balance... Although I still feel that Shinji's hand on Rei's naked breast was un-necessary.

I've seen a few dozen episodes almost a decade before. And well... lets just say that in time even more "awesome" chicks will appear with "great power" and they'll end the life of the enemy in quite stupid ways. That story is a typical TV-series. -_- The end-game-boss is always killed the same way, and the charatcers have miserable little problems and they have a miserable little personality to solve it in a miserable way. Yuck.

I think that scene with Shinji and Ayanami speaks a lot of their personality: Shinji is clumsy (and horny to be honest... but can't blame him. I'd go mad if I would be sorrouned hot ladies like Asuka, Ayanami, Misato, Ritsuko, et cetera :P ), and Ayanami is so calm, that she can freeze Hell. Both literally and allegoricaly ( ). And I would like to mention that I was DAMN jelaous of Shinji when I saw that particular scene. Shinji tends to get his filthy paws on the best things on Earth. And in this case, I mean that literally.... :P

You shouldn't blame him in the first place. He's a fourteen year old teen who's had a messed-up childhood. When I was fourteen I was easily that horny and clumsy when I was. Well, I'd never do something like the hospital scene... But then one could claim Shinji wasn't quite in his right mind in the time.

Like Tony Soprano said: 'He's thirteen, he gets and erection every ten minutes!'.

And, if one were to ignore the fact Rei's either falling apart or is ghostilly horrifying, you could call of EoE fanservice. Or outright Hentai.
