Yes, its one of those, a movie tie in game.

As like the movie, Pacific Rim: TVG is a simple, dumb, yet entertaining robot vs giant monster brawler. Yes I do actually find PR: TVG fun, which is hard to imagine for any movie tie in game. Unlike other movie Tie in games it doesn't try to waste any time with trying to follow the movie in terms of story and lacks voice overs, which is probably a good thing. Music is crap, so you may as well just turn it off in the settings, and instead play some of Eva's battle music which fits pretty well.

What little story there is is provided in the games intro with subtitles of the movies trailer narration, and through messages directed at the player in between the games 12 Story missions, in which you fight a number of recycled enemies, which are only a few of the Jeagers/Kaiju featured in the film (Gypsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon. Knifehead, Otachi, Leatherback, Scunner, and Slattern.) Along side the main 12 story missions are also 12 "Survival missions" in which the game play is the same only with no health recovery in between fights

For the actually looks of the game The Jeagers and the Kaiji stand out as the best looking madel in the game as "The character models to appear in the game were created from the same model data used in the film, allowing the Jaegers and Kaiju in the game to remain true to their original forms. Each Jaeger and Kaiju is unique in design, with their own weapons and fighting styles, meaning players will have to alter their tactics to account for the attributes of their character and opponent. "

Gameplay is well, as I said, it's a brawler. its one v one fights, with either a Jaeager/Kauji or a mix. Jeagers having two health bars representing it's two pilots, with Kaiju only having a single heath bar. Under the health bars is an Energy meter, for both Jeagers and Kaiju.

Energy is both built up by walking around or by attacking with basic melee moves, and is spent by either using ranged attacks, switching attack modes, using Power moves, and Fatal assault moves.

Power Moves are high damage attacks that require 40% charge, while Fatal Assaults are one hit Kills that need 90% or more energy. and certain Jeagers have alternate attack modes that use up energy while in them.

On the different maps there are pieces of the arena you can knock your opponent into for additional damage. as well you are able to stun or knock down enemies and vis versa allowing for some free hits.

As for character selection, the game lets you fight as either the Jeagers or Kaiju, in either Story or Survival modes. But one of the game's main draw backs is that only 3 Jeagers (Gypsy, Cherno, and Crisom) and 2 Kaiju (KH, and LB) are available to the player, the rest of the Jeagers and Kaiju (even ones included in the game's release) are locked away behind "DLC" price tags.

You are able to make a Custom Jeager/Kaiju in a customization mode, You can spend EXP to purchase a base model Jeager modeled on one the 3 default Jeagers. and the parts are interchangeable from model to model (Heads, Bodies, R.arms, L.arms, and Legs)

Titan class (Gypsy Danger)
Slammer class (Cherno Alpha)
Goliath class (Crimson Typhoon)

For "custom" Kaiju you basically rename it and upgrade it's stats, that's it.

Knifehead type
Leatherback type

As you play the game you earn Exp to use as currency to purchase either parts in the Shop or upgrade parts you own, only lvl 1 parts are available in the game's shop. You can randomly earn lvl 2 or lvl 2+* parts in the game's missions (* lvl2+ parts have a bonus to a certain stat in either Attack, Speed, or Defense) or buy lvl 3 parts as "DLC". Additionally you can buy in battle boost items or abilities you equip to a customized Jeager/Kaiju

Parts are individually upgraded in various states, HP, Attack, Ranged Attack, Armor, Attack Speed, Movement Speed, Resilience and Energy change. Head parts have Ability slots and an exclusive upgrade, up to a max of 5 slots.

In another locked away in "DLC" you can opt to actually customize the colors of your Jeager, to a surprisingly well detailed level as parts are able to be colored individually and even give logos. even the lights and their glow can be customized separately.

A lot of content is still unavailable unless purchased via DLC, and admittedly I have bought some of it, though I did get the game on sale, so I didn't mind as much.

Forgot to Mention about the multiplayer component, with 1 v 1 battles either locally or over Live/PSN, with the choice of siding with three different factions, earning ranks in each, and each having various rewards for their progression system.

Players can take part in either ranked or player matches, which i think maybe ranked matches are the only to progress in the different factions. You can search for various matches in either qikc or custom battle, or creating a session with various parameters, including a restriction via Jeager/Kaiju's rating, which is is measured by the overall stats of your custom built fighters.

If you have anything to add, or want to share your experiences with the game, feel free to share.
