This automated Mahjong table was at the apartment we rented in Shanghai. There was some tiles stuck in it that needed to be replaced by another set (that's why some are blue) and it took a few tries to figure out how to get it working.

Note that it takes about a minute for the tiles to shuffle and rack, so you can fast forward through the middle section where nothing appears to be happening. After that's done, a "Set" red light will appear in the middle, then hitting the button will open the top to allow everyone at the table to see that there are no more tiles in the machine.

Meet my new granddaughter, Emily 梅 :



Given that she is the third of three children, it's a little unfortunate that as well as meaning plum, 梅 also means "lowest" in a system of three ranks.

That's a rather peculiar naming convention; does she simply have a single-word Chinese name in addition to her Christian name, or is it some sort of fusion?

Her father is English, her mother Japanese (and her home is in Germany), so she has a name from each background. 梅 (Ume, meaning plum) is a Japanese female name. I presume that they'll write it "Ume" routinely - I dare say was being mildly pretentious using the kanji.

Went and saw Black Sabbath tonight. Easily the best concert I've ever been to. Gonna be sad to see them go after this tour is over but what a way to go out.
