Also known as the book that will answer none of our questions because it is purely about the animation of the film and basically has no text.

Just to be doubly clear

Announced: アニメーション原画集 = Groundwork = movie disected frame by frame

What we actually need (but still no word of it): 全記録全集 = CRC = lots of interviews and concept art

Well, at least now we know that the usual ballet of post-Rebuild movie books is still going with Q, maybe we'll hear about the CRC soon!

Isn't that a 10th of October I see in the title of the article? They announce the release fairly late, no?

By the way I don't remember : the 1.0 and 2.0 Groundworks also included unused storyboards and concept arts?
If that was the case that could be an interesting sight should they continue the trend with Q!

Groundwork for 1.0/2.0 did not include any unused material or concept art. They're 99% animation and often both the first version and the corrections for whatever the x.xx iteration or even TV->NME.

They feature no storyboards at all, the farthest back you go from animation is the layout on very, very few occassions.

That's why I tried to kill any and all potential excitement with the first post :D

Still, even if they reveal nothing the Groundwork books can be fun

GROUNDWORKS??? YES!!!!!

:jiggy: :boingy: :yippee:
:derp:

I've never read a CRC. I don't ever plan on buying a CRC simply because I can't read Japanese. Besides, working out a film's mysteries for myself is more fun for me anyway. The fan-translated interviews in the CRCs are just a neat little thing to have to embellish by love of Eva and my fandom of the filmmakers behind it.

So, this Groundworks for Q announcement actually excites me so much more than a CRC announcement.

Thanks for the update, been wondering about this, although I'm still missing the 2.0 Groundworks, with those 2 volumes and bloody pricing. :irked:

Same here. I guess the pictures aren't enough to sway you?

Oohh... Maybe..... Maybe the pictures would be enough to sway me. But the Groundworks have more of an instant gratification for me simply because it's all pictures.

Maybe after all of the Groundworks have been collected (I have both from 2.0, and 1.0's currently in the mail), I'll buy me some CRCs and dig up transitions on the internet, using their print-outs as bookmarks as I "read" through the books.

That looks more like the Zeruel fight from NGE.

No scene in NGE is as under-lit nor as hard core as the Zeruel battle scene.

So the groundwork is a physical book, right?

If so, does it just show some selected layouts and pieces of genga, or you can see the animation in movement with them?

It's more of the former and not a flipbook if that's the later question.

Here's a typical page for a lively shot: http://i.minus.com/ib1o6qTCzzzBOR.jpg

The static shots do get some attention too: http://i.minus.com/i44BeCmXH0Za1.jpg

With the NME books you also get to see a lot of fixing up where they give you both the inadequate original and the fixed shots. Nipple warning: http://i.minus.com/inLAYkBlrVRx4.jpg

No, no. It's from the fight against Zeruel, after Eva-01 slices Zer like a banana with its offensive ATF and decides to go on all fours to eat him alive.

It'd be nice to see, say...Kaworu getting his head blown off by the DSS choker in groundworks. That would be cool - although I think the CRC (with more info on what is going on) would be more appealing.

The groundworks would have in in black and white.

Rebuild of Evangelion 3.33 already gave it to us in full color

Quick, sort of related question. How come Groundwork of Evangelion 1.0 is credited as "GAINAX" and not "khara"? I thought GAINAX had little to nothing to do with NTE.

It was a while before khara established their own publishing label of Groundworks (グラウンドワークス)

The original run of Groundwork of Eva 1.0 book was published by Gainax. ISBN-13: 978-4903713182
It was eventually reprinted in 2011 under the Groundworks label. ISBN-13: 978-4905033028

Similarly the original 1.0 CRC was published by Japan Publications Trading Co., Ltd. (日本出版貿易). ISBN-13: 978-4903713175
The November 2012 re-release was under Groundworks. ISBN-13: 978-4905033011

The 2.0 CRC and Groundwork books were all by Groundworks.

Pictures are up at the Eva store.

http://www.evastore.jp/pc/article/Z0000107.html

It looks like for the first time ever the book will have LOTS of color instead of just a few pages.

Also interesting to see them printing out the 3DCG linework, but it seems to be in cases where the overlaying 2D effect is also present.

Do want.
