why is it that i can scour the internet for days and not find a true evangelion fan game?
Is it just that so few people have heard of the show? or is it simply that they just don't have the energy?( i'm making an evangelion platformer as i type this... probably gonna suck...)

A bit of a spoof-ish dating sim exists.

EDIT:
And by spoof-ish, I mean it more or less spoofs dating sims. The Eva bits are more or less close to canon (nothey'renotlol)

Didn't we get a lot of our EGF canon from a bunch of VNs supervised by Anno?

I don't think things like Girlfriend of Steel, etc. count in the prototypical definition of fan games, assuming that's what you're referring to.

Ah, there's also that Pokemon Purple that someone's working on... Pretty sure the thread is still on the first page in the fandom area.

I've had some ideas for an Evangelion game, but I'm not even going to attempt it until I have more experience making 3D games under my belt.

In the mean time, I'm working on the Pokemon Purple game that Agentomega mentioned, which is a Pokemon fangame with some Eva crossover.

With respect, as someone who put two years into a machinima production, if you're going to put effort into making a game, make an original game. If anything, make an original game that would appeal to fans of the thing that you want to make a fan-work out of.

I partially agree. The downsides of fangames (can't be sold, risk cease & desist) make them unsuitable for games that are meant to be taken seriously, but I love the potential of fangames for silly joke/parody games. Which is what Pokemon Purple is.

If I ever make a serious Eva-style game, it'll only be Eva-inspired instead of actually utilizing the Evangelion universe.

Probably not what you were after- but we did have the little, forum-board-game experiment of NGE: Tactics going for a short while.
Two years ago. Blimey.

I sometimes wonder if it's worth giving it another go...

Didn't NAveryW make an Evangelion-themed version of Clue? Would that count?

There was also an Unreal Tournament mod.

Looks the site for it is down.

I wonder if anyone out there has the mod for this saved for posterity.

I think the Eva-verse would lend itself well to an old-school adventure game, especially if the genre's emphasis on dialogue, environment, and exploration is utilized somewhat competently. But I also think it needs to be set outside of the show's timeframe.

Maybe a post-impact survival story?

A good idea, but there definitely needs to be exploration of an expansive underground complex and uncovering of horrible truths.

Agreed. It's always nice to have something original every once and while.

I made a 2.22-based Visual Novel sometime back. Obviously made long before we knew what 3.0 had in store.

Planned on making other ones (post-EoE, etc) but ran out of time/energy. Like I said in that post, if people want to continue or rework those games on their own, feel free. I never finished them so I don't mind.

____

Personally having gotten burned out from Eva fanworks when young, I totally agree it's better to make something original than use a preexisting work. But fans can do whatever they like.
