Just so you people know, the "Neon Genesis Evangelion Illustration and Artwork Collection" is a bootleg book. Don't buy it. It is eViL.

What's the big thing in the background here?
Tell me, is something eluding you, sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see?
If you wanna find out what's behind these cold eyes
You'll just have to claw your way through this disguise!

That one can be purchased for far less on sites such as JPQueen. In fact many of these books can be found for less elsewhere.

Yeah, JPQueen, where the sum of your expenditures is doubled by shipping...

toysnjoys seem to sell a ton of bootleg shit, look at the Totoro plushes, and look at the prices.

The offical Studio Ghibli totoro plushes I own were expensive as hell ($15 for a small Totoro) and are astoundingly high quality.

The bootleg Totoro plushes I own were super cheap and are of dubious quality; they look exactly like the photos toysnjoys are showing, except the toysnjoys ones are even worse in construction. Hideous looking.

So, in short, I would expect these nicely priced Evangelion books are almost certainly bootlegs.

As Monkey said, you can buy the genuine articles for less other places. In my experience, the only Eva books that are bootleg are the ones that were bootleg to begin with, such as that one title I pointed out earlier. (Now, music CDs, on the other hand...)

For a good overview of bootlegging, look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleg. Try using the "define:" directive on Google next time you need a term defined as well.

In this case, we're talking about collections of Evangelion images which have been assembled and reproduced in collections not authorized by GAINAX, or direct copies of GAINAX collection books. These often come from Taiwan (which is not party to international copyright treaties due to its questionable legal status as a country) and Hong Kong (which just seems to be a source of lots of pirated material).

You can usually tell they're bootlegged because they either a) are not titles ever released in the GAINAX catalog, b) they say so on the packaging (no, really! Son May in Taiwan makes it very clear that they are the manufacturer), or c) are of clearly inferior quality.

For good examples of anime goods that meet one or more of these criteria, just look for anime DVDs or CDs on Ebay. There is no such thing as a legitimate 1-disc copy of all 6 FLCL episodes, for instance, but Ebay merchants would like you to think otherwise.

I ordered my Der Monde (and Die Sterne) from Amazon Germany. I think I have a better chance of translating German to English then Japanese to English.

It isn't the original Japanese print but since Asuka is part German I can let it slide. Plus the print quality is just as good. :D

Glad I could help out. It was funny because I've been ordering from Amazon US a lot and the German layout is identical. I knew where to click easily. It looked like I knew German.
