I just watched this without subtitles and all I could take away from it was that somehow Anno managed to integrate a social message into a monster mash short film. A pretty interesting watch just by the visuals alone and it segues nicely into Q's grimdark clusterfuck of insanity and horror. So who else has seen it?

It's based off of the God Warriors from Nausicca (that destroys civilization). IIRC Higuchi directed it and Anno worked on the special effects.

Indeed. It set the tone perfectly in theatres. Especially following the credits where the film reel runs/stamps out to black (not sure what the terminology is there) with a loud boom...

Really left an impression on me anyway.

I watched the scene where they were walking acroos the fire and debris with their staffs, and I just assumed it was a prequel to Nausicaa. Does the dialogue hint at that idea?

Nausicaa is not set in (far future) world of ours by any indication. It's just Anno playing reference game if anything.

The destruction could have blasted them back technology wise.

I'm not saying it's impossible Nausicaa world is supposed to be far, far, far off future of our world because there's so little info to go one way or another, I'm saying one shouldn't consider this as official retcon of Nausicaä continuity but as Anno's fan film and more importantly that whether or not the world is "same" the events depicted in this film aren't part of canon.

Besides, the technology the ancient civilization did develop - including God Warriors - goes way, WAY ahead abilities of our modern day science which on its own is enough to set this flick as "what if God Warrior attacked modern Tokyo" fan film rather than serious part of canon.

Basically Nausicaa is not Shin Sekai Yori with which it's clearly set 1000 years from now and the past civilization that collapsed was ours.

Alright, seems reasonable.

Why who, is there a way for me to get English subs for the video? I have no idea what the Narrator is saying.

Ya know, I cannot imagine a translation that would make this whole thing worthwhile.

I think the god warriors are the coolest thing ever, so this was a treat. Granted, they looked like the puppets they were, but the redesign is top-notch... and the part where the proton cannon is first deployed? So impressively done! So nice to see an intact (as opposed to melting) god warrior blowing shit up with its mouth!

As I understand it, this thing still hasn't been translated. I don't think I have the skills to do the whole thing, but for fun I did some of the rather heavy-handed, lolanno captions at the end.

Caption “On the first day, humans and surface survivors will vanish.”
Narrator: It was like the god of creation building this world in seven days.
C: “On the second day, all living things will be gone from this world.”
C: “On the third day, the sun and moon will be destroyed, and day and night shall be no more.”
C: “On the fourth day, the ground will subside, and all shall be water.”
C: “On the fifth day, water and sky will vanish.”
C: “On the sixth day, light will disappear, and all shall be engulfed in darkness and chaos.”
C: “On the seventh day, calamity will finish its work, and quietly cry out from the joy of repose.”
C: “The Seven Days of Fire begin here.”

When I first saw the God Warrior, I couldn't help but think of Jim Henson. I mean that in the most positive way. The only part I disliked was the building exploding into bloody magma.

I was hoping that the warrior would give a soliloquy at the end. Share its thoughts.

UTW mentioned that they were going to sub it eventually, but I think that it's not been released yet.

With "As is" do you mean "standalone", cut from the full film? They have been uploaded on Nyaa a pair of days ago, search "Giant God".

Here's my attempt at a translation of the film. Due to the limits of my Japanese, and also to probable errors in interpretation, there will likely be mistakes, so please forgive them. I was especially unsure about the sentence beginning "なのに、僕たちに任せても" (translated beginning with, "Since the life of the world..."), which seemed hard to understand. Corrections or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Parts in brackets are words shown on screen.
SPOILER: Show
It happened last night.

My younger brother, a University student, suddenly shows up at my apartment, where I live alone. Since my younger brother has never come to my room before, even when we lived in our parents' house, there is something strange about the sight of him being there in the same space as my bed and clothing. Then he speaks.

(I'm sorry to break up your everyday life, but,)

What's up with him? Is he drunk?

(a great disaster is coming.)

What are you talking about?
Do you mean the rumors being spread on the internet? You were never dumb enough to believe something like that.

(I'm sorry to be so abrupt.)

(But this city is really going to be completely destroyed tomorrow.)

(In truth, disasters don't come out of the blue,)

(in reality they are preceded by signs or warnings.)

I started to become a bit frightened, thinking that I am facing someone who looks just my brother, but my brother would never say such things.

What... who are you?

(I am a warning.)

I am frightened.
Something strange is happening.
But I should have learned by now.
Strange things, even extraordinary things, happen.
My brother spoke.

(What's important is how, while living your everyday life,)

(you can be capable of dealing with the unexpectedness of a sign or a warning.)

That's...
A shiver runs down my spine. This guy is not normal. He is completely crazy.
When my legs start to shake,
my brother gives a slight smile.

(Well, I've left it up to you, my sister.)

(I'm sorry for seeming to torment you, but of course it is just the opposite.)

And with that he suddenly fades, and disappears.

I should have been serious about telling people last night.
I should have cried out in a louder voice.
In the course of ordinary life, how do I say something like, now the city we live in is going to disappear?
But that warning won't reach people anymore. It will no longer be heard.
The disaster itself is taking place before our eyes.

(You must escape this city before tomorrow comes.)

God is not only a creator.
God is not just the existence that receives our wishes and prayers and grants them.
The great disaster descends from the sky in a form like the form of a human being,
and we understand.
The essence of God is fear.
That is why human beings supplicate themselves, on their knees and with their hands clasped, praying to something that seeks to harm us, to take our lives.

The world has a fixed life span.
Since the life of the world would just be prolonged pointlessly if it was left up to us, the world forces those things to come back to it.
At that time we realize that everything has to come to an end.
But all we wanted was to keep living. We didn't want the world to end.

(On the first day, human beings and the creatures that live upon the earth will disappear.)

It is said that the God of creation made this world in seven days.

(On the second day, all living things will disappear from the world.)

We too created a variety of things in this world.

(On the third day, the sun and moon will be destroyed, and day and night will cease to be.)

(On the fourth day, the land will sink, and all will be water.)

(On the fifth day, water and sky will disappear.)

It seems that in a single moment many things are destroyed in this manner. But surely the destruction will take as long as the creation.

(On the sixth day, light will be no more, and all will be enveloped by darkness and chaos.)

If it takes the fire seven days to consume the world, then there will be that much of a chance to escape. Escape. Survive. You can create a new world yourself.

(On the seventh day, the calamity finishes its task, and weeps silently in the joy of repose.)

Who knows what the intention of the world is? What does it matter how God feels?
In a world coming to an end, I will live, escaping, waiting, hoping that something other than myself still exists.

(This is the beginning of the Seven Days of Fire.)

Before the new world arrives,
the great fire will come.

Wow. Thank you. That script gives the film a completely different flavour, compared to just seeing the visuals.

I love the ending, Genesis in reverse. (Yes, I know that Reichu had already translated that part, but having the whole script gives the ending much more weight.)

Hi all,

Using 1731298478's posting of a translation of the Ghibli short "God Warrior Attacks Tokyo" prior to the movie, I went through and created subtitle files in subrip (.srt) and Advanced SubStation (.ass) formats for the short. You can get them both (and the original translation txt) here:

https://anonfiles.com/file/c012b885d6b5cff914fecff0374e0d50

I also merged these into the full [EGF] Evangelion 3.33 [1080p] subtitles that DemonSpade posted above, to create a single .ass file that has the subtitles for the short as well as the main film. Here is the zip file (it includes all the font files from the original release, etc.):

https://anonfiles.com/file/27c71616d0e909994bf6a3b4f7290e05

(Cross-posted into the other thread as well...sorry, I don't know what the etiquette on that is.)
