View Original PostElectric Sachiel wrote:^ Funimation has been sitting on their asses for a while now watching other companies like Sentai Film Works pick up anime licenses left and right. I wouldn't hold my breath on a speedy Funimation release for 3.0, assuming they even get the license to the film's north american release. Funimation really is getting lazy these days. I haven't seen any good announcements from them about new and upcoming anime releases for a while now. They seem content to make money on the old licenses they already have instead of getting new ones....

Of course they'll license it. They just need to wait for the Japanese DVD to be released before they can begin asking for it.

I don't think so. The german distributer of 1.11 and 2.22 announced their release of 2.22 before the Japanese version even had a release date.

Seriously? You're saying the German licensee and distributor pinned down a release date for 2.22 via home release DVD/BD before the Japanese version was even released, let alone had a release date?

Odd.

Funimation will get 3.0 & Final. They're the big players in the anime field & can out bid all their competitors easily. So a few shitty series slipped through their fingers. I promise if you looked at their books Eva 1.11 & 2.22 are among their five biggest earners. They won't let anyone else take 3.33.

In fact only way Funimation could lose the final two Rebuild films is if one of the big studios - Universal, Warner Brothers, etc - took note of the millions 3.0 made in Japan & buy up the rights. ... but I'm positive that won't happen.

And look what happened with Sadamoto's manga - simultaneous release in Japanese and English of the latest volume. Perhaps attitudes are changing.

I'm guessing the reason it takes Funimation longer to get the licenses may be due to heightened expectations on the Japanese side. I remember hearing that the license holder in Japan (can't remember who that is off the top of my head) required a theatrical screening for 1.0 before it could be released; apparently Funimation had to argue for a long time to get the number of cinemas down to a reasonable amount.

There's more money in the American market (or at least it's perceived that way), so I think that can lead to longer, more complicated license negotiations.

It was quick and the german release was just 2 or 3 months after the Japanese release.

I really can't take what your saying seriously when you say that its alright for Funimation to let the majority if not all the anime titles to come out in within the last 2 years go to other companies. Thats a lot of potential big bucks to be made there! We'll see what happens with Eva 3.0. Anything can happen right now. Never say never if another company snatches up the license.

Wow! A lot of people are importing for this installment! Looks like for some waiting for a North American release is not an option! Who can blame them!? Awaiting confirmation for a U.S. release must be agonizing as it is.

That's a shame. That would happen Anime movie releases get more noticeable outside Japan. They would probably also make it so the Theatrical release wasn't just one day.
Please just call me Ian, "TheFrisky" is more of a title.

So no info on the comparisons between the Hong Kong release and the Japanese or Funi ones?

You're sitting at your anime desk making anime and bam a horde of mustachioed power lifters bust in wielding Glocks and screaming at you in a language where the word for butterfly is "schmetterling" and they tell you if you don't license your anime they'll woo your mother, sisters and wives with a dinner at a moderately priced chain restaurant and a night of efficient German sex.

What do you do?

Also Khara is going to demand big money for the license. Only big players like Funi are going to be able to bid on it at all. I wouldn't worry about them losing it.

Actually, I wouldn't mind. I'd hate to lose Brina Palencia and Colleen Clinkenbeard from the voice cast but I wouldn't mind if Asuka were recast.

They said they plan to do it as long as they're still in existence when it comes out if I recall correctly. I think the only thing was their work on 1.11 and 2.22 were joint projects or something and the other guys weren't around anymore? I dunno, they'll most likely do it and if they don't someone else will. This will likely be one of the most downloaded anime files of 2013, no way in hell will it go unsubbed for long. Their epeens would never let them skip it.

Yeah, UTW teamed up with THORA for the 1.11 and 2.22 projects. I remember reading that post back in November, but I didn't remember the bit about THORA not existing anymore. I was wondering if they'd made any updates to that since the release date for 3.33 was announced. I'll have to do a bit of searching when I get home; my workplace's network won't let me access .me websites.

THORA still exists so I'm likely remembering it wrong then.

They'd better release it before I go on my one-month anime hiatus. I'll murder somebody if not.
