The git page does not have all character card images yet. Would it be possible for someone to compile that? I'd like to use those images for a personal project. The Zippy/cassland links do not work anymore. Perhaps google drive?

So would anyone be able to give me a summary of each alternate ending? I've gone through the whole thread and there are still some things I'm a little lost on. It would be nice to get a comprehensive list of every diverging storyline in the game, that is until the final translation is done and I can play it for myself. This thread was the only place I could find that goes in depth on the endings.

Are you directly hex editing it? Most of the tooling already exists though. And the text in the exes has been mapped out and translated. See: eboot.json
The difficult part isn't the eboot text. It's the 39k+ lines of dialogue that even machine translation messes up cause it doesn't get the Evangelion context. See: global_translations.json

As for me I'm still working on this. Despite no updates on the github, worked on it all through June 2025 till like October 2025. Plan to pick up again March 1st, 2026 again.

Added an EVS scene player that replays the EVS.json files the existing tools create
So one can view how the scene would look on PC without having to load it into the emulator

99% of the effects aren't implemented though, just basic dialog, avatar, and background loading

rezual's code are really helpful since they already cover every parsing tool needed. It do have some performance issue such as read one byte at a time. (I managed to cut down the total extraction time to ~30s)

The Main Debug menu actually doesn't exists. Instead there is a Battle Debug menu that can be triggered before each battle, and most of its functions are not equipped.

Evs files have many redundent texts. Many sentences appear more than once across multiple files.

Redirect Filesystem calls to memory stick is possible. As shown in https://github.com/xeonliu/nge_2_re/pull/13

If you have any other issues, maybe I can share what I've already found!

If anyone wants to have fun, there's still the 3D model format and character animation formats to figure out.
As well as the PS2 file formats which might be Big/Little endian swapped I forget.
The PS2 version has a Korean version which could be used to assist with translating some of the text if someone were to figure it out.

That is a huge shame! The sub debug menus exist but yeah I spent days trying to find the Main Debug Menu but no luck. As you said, at this point it looks like it's been removed from the game. Hopefully a prototype/beta version of the game leaks somewhere with the Main Debug Menu still in there!

Yeah! I've combined them all as unique entries in global_translations.json.
The idea is that those will be translated, then the EVS files get updated from there, and if the EVS files need further tweaks based on who is talking, it can be done later.

Like it doesn't make sense to have translate 元気ですか?for Shinji and then retranslate 元気ですか?for Asuka.

Cool! At this moment though I'm avoiding writing any PSP specific tooling.
I'm imagining the final patch just patching the entire ISO.

Though the memory stick loading could allow custom mods on the fly so that's still cool!

Yes. I will find a place to upload it if you need. I was using Qwen3-VL for recognition, some characters are incorrect though.

Yes! Also hope we can figure out how to append localization member to the original cast that scrolls when the game is over :shifty:

As for PS2 game. I did try to extract them using your tool. The images will glitch. Does it have anything to do with the 'endian' you mentioned?
I do lack knowledge on image/sprite formats.

Battle Debug menu


You can enable them by setting

Code: Select all

Feel free to convert it into CWCheats.

Although many functions are not equipped, you can still change battle settings such as time, angel, pilots etc.

It will automatically trigger before the battle. Useful when you want to test a certain battle scene.

I'm imagining the final patch just patching the entire ISO.


You can still write plugins by replacing EBOOT.BIN with your PRX File :wink:
then replace BOOT.BIN with the decrypted EBOOT.BIN
Your own EBOOT.BIN can load the new BOOT.BIN then.

Maybe. I haven't dug too deeply. Endianess means if you write 0x12345678 to a file, it might get stored as 0x12, 0x34, 0x56, 0x78 in hex, or reversed, 0x78, 0x56, 0x34, 0x12. The files might also be different in the parameters they have in their header section of the file.

Battle Debug menu


You can enable them by setting

Feel free to convert it into CWCheats.

Although many functions are not equipped, you can still change battle settings such as time, angel, pilots etc.

You can still write plugins by replacing EBOOT.BIN with your PRX File :wink:
then replace BOOT.BIN with the decrypted EBOOT.BIN
Your own EBOOT.BIN can load the new BOOT.BIN then.

There's a great article on the fonts used in Evangelion https://fontsinuse.com/uses/28760/neon-genesis-evangelion

Mostly it comes down to Helvetica for English and Matisse for Japanese.

But what's interesting is that for Another Cases, Alfa System didn't use Matisse.
They used a font I can't find at all.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter, since for the translation we should use Helvetica,
but I was hoping to find it since it can be used to do a better OCR scan if need be.

White = Font they used
Red = Matisse

Using your OCR json, I started writing a Python script that uses a font (I use Matisse Classic) and extra metadata I'm entering by hand,
to rerender the title:

I haven't published the script to Github yet.
I want to add more title formats to the renderer first before I do that.

With the script, it means translating the titles won't require painstakingly editing things in a picture editor since the program generates it in the proper position.

Like one of the title card formats are like (Big 2 letters) (Small remaining letters) "\n" (Big 3 letters) (Small remaining letters) etc.
It scales multiple phrase regions by the aspect ratio if the words are too long

Ah! That's such a good idea! Scaling these Sentences are indeed boring and error-prone. It's also hard to change the translation.
