[SPOILERS] 3.0's Developmental History

I havnt actually seen it yet, but I am too impatient to wait for a subtitled version. So naturally i have been looking everywhere at plot analysis' and the general concensus I have been getting is that this movie isnt anything like what was shown on the "Next time on Evangelion" stuff that was at the end of 2.0. I find that weird since 1.0 was dead on with it's preview of 2.0.

So my question is, did they just decide to rewrite 3.0 and Final? And if so, does anyone know why? Have they made some kind of announcement at to why 3.0's plot is so out there compared to the first two, and why it's plot is so different from what was originally expected?

I mean, I was actually looking forward to this movie until I learned what I have. I just don't see how the series can be good at all with such a big change in the middle of the story.

Answers!!! Someone!!! (Thanks in advance!!!)

Popular speculation right now is that the preview showed stuff that happened between 2.0 and 3.0

None of the footage from 2.0 preview made it into 2.0 as it was though. Plenty of rewrites and reanimations were involved.

Given 3 years of development time for 90 something film that is pretty much given. As for why, who knows? It's Anno being Anno and being unsatisfied with initial scripts. Bad habit of his that led to creation of NGE ep 26 without finished scripts lol.

At least this time around he has all the time and money in the world he needs.

Personally speaking 3.0 has finally made NME jump into officially interesting as fuck tier
ran1: Oh gosh this sentence gave me an internet boner. You're so tsundere.
Mugwump: Goddamn it, Xard! Take me in your arms, you magnificent sex god bastard!
And don't forget to wear the Ran mask.
Eva Yojimbo: You really are the Otaku equivalent of a Catholic and Jew rolled up into one giant dakimakura of guilt.
Gob Hobblin: Sanctimonious, subtly racist, vaguely misogynist, somehow says something while at the same time saying...nothing, really, at all....

Nice, Xard. That's nice.

I was thinking that 3.0 was shorter than 2.22 was, but it's shorter by only six minutes (106 to 112 minutes run time). Maybe you can squeeze a few extra minutes in the video release but not enough to cover what they showed us in that trailer.

Of course, the other explanation was that Anno-sama just trolled us all along with a fake trailer in 2.0.

well, at first I had mixed feelings the new direction 3.0 took. Considering a handful of the scenes which were implied, rather than animated, are the scenes i spent 2 years pondering over and asking myself if they would work. only to be brushed aside. However, the way i have been able to get excited about 3.0 is by appreciating the joy that I obtain from Eva. I understand that half of the wonder of Eva is looking for answer, and oh boy, 3.0 leaves plenty. but what does that really mean? 3.0 just encourages me to solve this wacky puzzle and to make sure all of my favorite characters stay safe. It also gives us up to 106 minutes of eva to obsess over. I don't know about most people here, but im looking forward to some of the old timer's theories and connection to what 4.0 or (final) might bring.
So knives out.

I don't think they decided to rewrite the plot after the 2.0.
They painted black silhouettes behind some eva store in Japan of every major character from rebuilt and the fan community only identified every person there after 3.0, which leads me to believe that this plot twist was planned from the start [Why else would they include new post-14 year characters in the picture back when 2.0 was still new?]

I thought those silhouettes weren't revealed until rather recently and a long time after 2.0 and 2.22 had been released.

First news about the silhouettes came out about a year ago. Though, I'm just going by the thread that announced it.

There were rumors that they scrapped their movie in mid-production and started from scratch halfway through.

I guess they really did.

The silhouettes are all in Rebuild 3.0 and the wall is backdated by a year. So maybe they threw everything out, but they did it more than a year ago.

Which might make sense, given that there was about 1.5 years between 1 and 2, but 2.5 years between 2 and 3. But i'm doubtful. The more I look at things the more things that didn't make sense in 2.0 might end up making sense in the end... we just haven't seen Final, which could explain/redeem, or be an epic troll.

2.0 was 108 minutes before the extended scenes in 2.22 boosted it to 112 minutes. We could expect the same change in duration for the same reasons between 3.0 and a possible 3.xx.

There was a statement of somebody working at Khara, that they still are revising the script... which was around early 2011... In late 2011 we had the silhouettes, so I think the plot-decisions must have been maid in summer 2011... I guess. Which is pretty long time if you consider that HA was released in summer 2009... So they might have scraped ideas all the time, as they did with 2.22...

Writers always revise scripts.

Listen to the narration of the Q next time preview. There's not one thing said in that narration that didn't happen. All can be linked to the film.

This is true. Some of the visuals might be inconsistent with Q, but since when was that ever not true for a next time preview for Eva? Even the TV series had its inconsistencies.

"The quickening of Eva-08 and its pilot(s)"? Seems to me that most of the ideas originally attributed to Eva-08 were exported to Eva-13 (dual piloted, weird chest armor, resemblances to Eva-01, "quickening"*, etc.). Eva-08 got a few leftovers (like... uh... a horn on the top of the head), but otherwise seems to be a pretty unremarkable production model Eva.

* The film gives Eva-13 "birth" imagery through the use of an egg-like, fluid-filled generation chamber.
What if... Kaworu bonded with Misato instead of Shinji, and the two of them were siblings?

I think this will clear up when a redone preview clip for 2.22 is made, then it should be clear which plot-element changed into what.

I wonder when/if this will happen, the NTV Roadshow of 2.22 surprised me for the complete lack of a trailer, personally I was vaguely expecting that they would have made a 3rd (!) one for that airing. Well, I'm also vaguely expecting that they'll have to retcon the 3rd Impact scene sooner or later so they could really solve both issues together. How would they call it? Eva 2.33?
So let’s make a wish.

Early in the production of Evangelion 3.0 I wonder if there was any animation done that more closely meshed with the previews seen at the end of 2.0? Or was 3.0 just perpetually stuck rewriting script after script for the first 2 years? In any case I still dont understand why the guys at Khara including Anno are limiting themselves to just 95 minutes? With all the money they have coming in surely they can make a 120 minute film?

In order to wrap up all the loose ends in the 4th movie I strongly feel they should extend the movie's length to 120 minutes. I think its the only way we can avoid getting a shitty ending....
