What anime are you watching right now? May 2012

On the final stretch of Dunbine, hopefully will finish it tomorrow.

Oh and I'm torrenting the RAWs for this, which will be finished sometime between tomorrow and Thursday. Which as an anon on /m/ has described it, is 'Indiana Jones with a giant robot and Norio Wakamoto as your crazy knife throwing older brother'. It sounds like the craziest shit ever. And as such, it has no subs yet, so I'll have no clue as to what the hell everyone's saying.
"Are you suggesting Toji was nearly killed because his eva had a yeast infection?" - NemZ
"You know...pretty much everybody has a motive to kill Kaji. So let's just take this to it's logical conclusion and say Pen-Pen killed Kaji in a jealous fit of rage over Misato." - Trajan

StrikerS didn't know what to do with the extra episodes it got, so padded madly. You get spikes of action around 6-7, 11-12, 16-17, then it all comes together in about 23-end. which has the CMoA's that make the wait worthwhile. And in the meantime you have Subaru making rainbows look straight, and Fate and Nanoha being a settled married couple.

I didn't think you did that sort of thing. Tell us more.

You've seen my MAL profile, haven't you? They're the ones I rank a 2/10.

But not to worry, coming soon I will reveal a three part special TDSA Takes on X! The X in this case? I take on three shoujo franchises, two of which are magical girl related. Trust me, I'll explain soon.

In related news I'm now three quarters through Fighbird, why the hell is this series so awesome?

By Smirnoff, Wandering Son is nostalgic and sentimental to the point of bursting! Almost every scene, even indoors, is bathed in beams of sunlight that flares up the screen; watching the show anytime is like staring into a charged lightbulb. Even Makoto Shinkai would tone down these levels of moodiness.
"Sentient ice cream."

View Original Postsymbv wrote:To say I'm thoroughly happy with Nisemonogatari doesn't quite capture the solid and fulfilled feeling this installment in Monogatari series ended up giving  And I don't really feel the stuff to be fap material - like a piece of nude sculpture, do I appreciate it as a piece of art? Or just a piece of object for fapping? Both may exist in the people's reaction, and may exist in the creator's intention as well, but nowadays I tend to look at it from an arts angle. I find the material to be tintillating but I don't really see it fappable. Perhaps I should read some Nise doujin first...

I'm not really intending to debate this (I'm actually a bit amazed you dug up such a old  ) but there's quite a bit of difference between nude art and the leering, lecherous approach of NisiOisiN/Shinbo. The way how Nise approaches its subject matter(s) had generally far more in common with pornography than nude photography, from choice of angles to differing subtexts often present.

View Original Postsymbv wrote:As I said before, people in 2ch (from where the comments of yaraon were drawn) never seem to even understand why Bake sold so well. Not at that time, and so even now. So to them Nise being able to sell greatly is even more mystifying. It just goes to show that how the -monogatari phenonmenon is not restricted to anime otakus. In fact I would argue that this is one anime that seems to be pandering to otakus but in fact draws its appeal from a much wider base. And I think I would like to add that there are many female buyers of the light novels and anime too -- are they also attracted only by its being "pornomonogatari"???

All I said is that less enthusiastic reaction to this "2nd season" will not stop it selling well because the fanbase is huge in any case. I was not making any implications about fanbase itself

View Original Postsymbv wrote:This I should say its the series's major achievement and success.

This is only if one thinks loyalty to source material is the most important thing to consider. I've always been advocator of adaptation distillation if there's room to improve. For example Kara no Kyokai films. Nasu thought his old novels were a bit shabby and could use some severe editing and cutting up fluff and meandering parts but when he read the script to first film he noticed they'd already made all revisions he intended to do and that it was pretty much definitive take.

Gundam: Origins manga also cuts a lot of Tomino's weaker moments and improves on original MSG in quite few ways based on what I've read. You could say the MSG film trilogy already was adaptation distillation

Shinbo is a guy who puts loyalty to source material over possible revisions and improvements. I think in Nise's case some revisiions wouldn't have hurt (not that I expected them, knowing fully well the kind of approach Shinbo has).

View Original Postsymbv wrote:Actually this is another bit that is questionable - as a fan of the original novel I would rather see more about how Araragi viewed and analysed Sejougahara's haircut. But I don't think the way it was presented in the anime would confuse viewers unfamiliar with novel though, as even in the novel Senjougahara never got to explain why she cut her hair.

After final episode I saw posts from quite a few people (unaware of coming haircut) very baffled by it and how it was thrown at the very last minute. So it seemed to be confusing enough for quite many. Not me but then again I knew to expect the haircut

View Original Postsymbv wrote:Did not expect much to be revealed. In fact the novel does not really shed much light either. We just know that Hanekawa knows what she's got to know and it is good enough to get Gahara to release Koyomi. I don't have much problem with that though.

It was just a dynamic I was interested in and which held unexplored potential to me. I might've found series's more engaging had they zeroed in more on that than Koyomi sisters.

View Original Postsymbv wrote:You are baited? I guess many fans handle the material more sensibly than you do...

I was alluding to this Shaft parody that I used to see quite a lot on /a/ back in the day

View Original Postsymbv wrote:And comparison to ToLoveRu Darkness is, while understandable, at the end misses the point. TD is not really pretending anything but I would say that Nise wraps it in several layers of concepts, ideas and thinking that do not have to do with fan-service or fetish, and so while fan-service and fetish are a major part of the anime, it is not the only thing to go, unlike TD.

Sure, I agree. Nise is much better than TD and definetly richer. Darkness is without doubt the closest manga has ever got to being porn without actually being porn, achievement - no matter how questionable - in itself

Nise also demands some congrats for originality, it's not often for work of fiction to spawn a new fetish like Nise seemed to do with toothbrushing

View Original Postsymbv wrote:Well, but coming from a guy whose most favorite show in the last season is, surprise, NOT Nisemonogatari but Highschool DxD, perhaps people may think that "oh just another fan-service moefag liking his fan-service anime", but I also want to point to anybody who has not seen HDD to give it a chance. I came into it expecting just series of fan service snapshots, but ended up cheering for the guy as he grew up, made hard decison and fought hard to protect things he really cared. In a way, it is actually the MOST SHONEN show of the last season. I am pleased to see that this anime is among the top THREE BESTSELLING anime of the last season, a status that just a pure fan-service anime could not dream of achieving. Again here many in 2ch expressed their disbelief and even disgust, but who said the so-called otaku posters in 2ch really know everything about anime?

My friend who watched it said pretty much the same so yeah I know it's supposed to be unusually good.

View Original Postsoul.assassin wrote::rofl: You've done a 180 right there, like

Not really, I've never doubted the potential entertainment value avalaible but as for the series's quality (it's important for a serious bad anime connoisseur like me to be able to separate the two, otherwise Garzey's Wing would be ready to challenge Miyazaki's oeuvre)... that was always a question mark. Premise is attractive in its loltasticness and I'm going to peruse placebo-Macross untill I get the real deal again, even if it comes with AKB48 kool aid.

View Original PostMr. Tines wrote:Lancaster, I would have thought.

Yeah, it looks like Kawamori's fetish for using real world locations as basis for settings (such a shame 9/11 fucked all over Macross Zero's original plotline that was set in NYC) was combined with Japanese love for punning to some pretty loltastic results. If written in kana Ranka star and Lancaster are already identical but the place also got a kanji name 藍花星

藍花 in this case is read as "Ranka" and the 藍花星 put together means "Orchid Star" (but on its own 藍花/orchis would be read "aika" making this intentional exception)

lol

So yeah, Japanese name (Ranka Hoshi) is already something of a Ranka reference but when Hoshi is written as "star" with katakana (ランカスター rankasutaa) it becomes Lancaster's Japanese spelling and the setting is pretty much dystopian industrial Lancaster so...

kinda complicated naming process...

View Original PostTwin Drive Sigma Aquarion wrote:What is this AK48 stuff?

AKB48's overwhelmingly the most popular music act in Japan as of now and Akimoto's business empire got a hold of Kawamori with its tentacles of monetary gain. So now he and Satelight are doing weirdass scifi show partly about the group's far future incarnation. Heavy Macross influences abound.

I may have just discovered the most average j-toon ever made:

Image
“Ray the animation” follows the exploits of Ray Kasugano, a doctor with X-ray vision. Ray was originally raised for organ harvest by a mysterious “H-ring” man, and currently works for an eye-patch wearing, peg-legged hospital director alongside kung-fu kicking nurses.

Sounds awesome, right?

It isn’t.

The animation quality wanders between adequate to “we don’t have the budget for this” bad; the action/fight scenes in particular are downright laughable.
The character designs are blander than a tap-water cocktail. Everybody looks the same. It doesn’t help that later in the show- clones start showing up.
There’s an underlying plot of Ray seeking her childhood companions from the organ farm; at the end of one episode she finds one of them, rushes to him, trips over a rock, and he disappears. It wasn’t even a big rock. I broke my nose from the resulting facepalm.
The story does very little with Ray’s x-ray vision gimmick, and the operations she is required to work hardly call for it.

Image

The series does have its pluses- Ray herself is an interesting character, and another welcome example of that oh-so-rare thing: a strong female lead who is neither a teenager nor a sex-object.
Medical shows in general have that built-in drama with the whole “will the patient live/die” dilemma, and RTA is no exception. At least when we aren’t dealing with parasitic plants…
The series is a comfortable 13 episodes, never gets too complicated and gives us a happy ending with no nagging loose ends.

Characters are likable, and forgettable. The stories interesting, and boring.
The whole product levels out as very, very average. Never quite tipping above or below that middle rating.

RTA is my new measuring stick for a show’s quality.

If I ever say a show is “good” or “bad” in the future, what I’m really saying is:
“This show is better/worse than Ray the Animation.”

My scale currently looks like this:

Oh yeah, I should probably announce my next project!

SPOILER: Show
TDSA Takes on Shojo Junk!

Once I finish Nanoha Strikers, I, the number one expert of monsters of the week, am going to take on this beloved girly junk once and for all! I'm taking on not one, not two, but three of them!

First of the three, Magical Knight Rayearth!

"But TDSA that has mecha and therefore you will probably like it for the wrong reasons!

True, that is where part two comes in, Cutey Honey F! If Go Nagai cannot make a magic girl anything good I give the hell up 'cause he can make even ecchi good (ECCHI PEOPLE! THIS GUY!).

"But TDSA, maybe you hate just the magical girl parts! Shojo is clearly for you 'cause you like Escaflowne!"

True, but why? It was a mech series with Shoji Kawamori at the helm and I am a fan of his works. That is why I am taking on a regular one featuring no one I know of and taking on a vampire series at the same time! Part three, Vampire Knight!

-the only English language novel actually being developed in parallel to its Japanese version involving a pan-human Soviet in a galactic struggle to survive and to export the communist utopia/revolution to all the down trodden alien class and race- one of the premise being that Khrushchev remains and has abandoned Lysenko stupidity

One CLAMP classic, one Go Nagai and one that sank without a trace. It's not like you're exactly mainlining the estrogen there.

To my shame, I actually saw an episode of HiMM, back before I became jaded and cynical, but passed the more recent Asobi ni Ikuyo: Bombshells from the Sky by entirely, because by then I knew how to decode /a/.

Remember to keep things spoilered, then. I'm slowly working my way through the second season.

Also, you might want to change that dishonorable, unmanly signature of yours. Remember: you cannot call it junk until you've seen it.

Calling something junk isn't always trashing it though, sometimes I use it to generalize things.
