Considering i've only recently got into Evangelion again after a long hiatus i'm left wondering after rewatching 1.11 about the ending... the coffins and Kaworu and Seele and hoping if someone could provide some of their own theories on this ending? Thanks!

The coffins are either for the Angels that have died, the Angels who have yet to be faced, or the Angels from the original series.

I'm afraid that's all I can theorize about.

Or, they are the children... this theory is getting backed up by the many yet-unknown silhouettes in behind the eva-store.

Perhaps the coffins are just for Kaworu/Kaworu clones?

I don't really think that that's too likely. It doesn't seem like there would have been anything that would've killed him at this point.

I'm not gonna lie,I have tried to break down most of eva, but those coffins are one thing I am letting go and just seeing where that story arc goes.

Well seeing as how we already know 3.0 is going to have a Unit 2 capable of fighting in space I would not be surprised to see those coffins show up again in either the next film or Final.

Maybe the previous clones couldn't handle the vacuum of space. :hahaha:

I want to think that the coffins have something to do with whatever "Seele's Children" are.

Yes, that might true. Kaworu is present in the preview during the SEELE's Children scene, and he was also in a coffin. There's four coffins left or so iirc, and there's four silhouettes as well.

Who knows.

If you look at Kaworu's scenes on the moon, he might not be in a vacuum. There's some fluttering in his hair when he puts on his plug-suit, which means there's some gases, probably air surrounding him.

He also speaks, which doesn't work well in a vacuum.

My guess is that he's generating an AT-field around him which contains air somehow, and also shields him from being affected by the temperature difference.

That looked like it was from the gases being sucked out of the plugsuit. Also, the fluttering of things like a flag happens in a vacuum (like on the moon landing), since there's no air to cause the movement to stop once it's set in motion, but that doesn't look like what's happening here. The fact that Kaworu's hair does stop fluttering seems to indicate some kind of air resistance.

That kinda reminds me of Dr. Manhattan from Watchmen.

Yes, if you mean "pushed out" by the plugsuit. But to add, the plugsuit would be in a vacuum as well, and it's hollow and not sealed, it pushes out the gases occupying it as it tightens around his body - it occupies the same space as Kaworu as well.

@Drabant:
That final image was really illuminating!

You've identified one of the Adams from Second Impact!

Calling it now: the world of NGE was created by Dr. Manhattan after he left the Earth so he could understand human nature better. Why else would there be so much psychological talk going on in the series?

It's kind of interesting that he uses a plug suit in the first place -- if his powers are comparable to NGE's Kaworu, he doesn't really need one.

^ Who says he's even an Angel this time around? We don't know that for certain, and we don't even know what clone number the current Rei is.

it is safe to assume she is the second as the collar she wore in the LCL tank in 2.22 said Rei II
