Has anyone considered the possibility that Asuka was menstrating?

Even scarrier now, huh?

Indeed it's possible but it doesn't look that scary now, especially if you happen to live with a sister who continuously forgets to delete evidences of her menstruations, you know.

Curiously it seems that the NGE parts that scar me the most are the ones in which there is no violence or blood at all.

As for one scene that scarred me: I think this is around episode 22, Shinji Asuka and Misato are sitting in the dining table eating together like a sort of family. Except that they're not, their issues and problems have driven them agaisnt everyone else and specially themselves, and where once they found at least some sort of comfort and understanding in each other, now they only see pain, bitterness and misdirected aggression. I don't know if i'm making any sense, but it's just really sad to me, seeing them sitting together in such a cold manner, having lost the bond and comfort they previously had.

All of the dummy Reis being shown to Shinji and Misato was pretty freaky when I was watching it for the first time, and how visceral their destruction is :O

First page OTT

Scarred. Not scared. Dammit.

And probably the scene in which Unit 01 crushes Touji's entry plug. Watched it when I was eight and never saw what happened afterwards because of school. Shit scarred me dude.

I'm not convinced that wasn't a typo on OP's part.

I watched NGE in its entirety when I was fourteen. So it's safe to say that a lot of it was scarring. Especially considering that I was going through my identity crisis at the time, so a lot of what I saw I could relate to. The sequences in episode 16 where Shinji makes contact with Leliel hit me hard at the time, since I wasn't sure of who I was, so I traced a lot of the dialogue back to myself. (Same goes for the identity sequences in EoTV)

As for modern day, it would probably be the third impact sequence. From the moment Kumm Susser Tod starts playing till the end of the movie. I find it hypnotizing, and haunting, all at once.
It's difficult in times like these; ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality.
It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical.
Yet I cling to them because I believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.

He didn't actually say scared, he said scarred. This may have been a typo, but he repeated it twice, which makes me question what this thread was intended to be and what it has become.

With that said, I'll answer both. There were no frightening scenes, but as people have stated, there are many shocking ones. One such scene was when Unit 01 devoured an Angel after killing it. If the OP actually meant scarred with two R's, I would have to say the most disturbing scene was when Unit 02 was eaten by the Mass Production Evangelions in EoE.
I musn't run away.

The one part that left my mouth agape in amazement, horror and morbid fascination was the Instrumentality sequence. In terms of pure shock value, it's damn near impossible to top.

It was pretty moving, but i actually found it extremely beautiful.

Actually, i found many of the scenes that people found disturbing or whatever (Asuka and Rei's death, ep. 22, etc.) As magnificient or beautiful. Odd stuff.

Yeah, definitely. It just took more views and some contemplation for me to see that. The first viewing left me with a feeling of sensory overload....

Considering how loaded that scene is, in terms of aesthetics and animation, plus the important position or weight it has in the plot and themes of the series, i can't say i'm surprised. That and a lot of intense shit happened just before Komm Susser Todd, i imagine some people would be actually nearing shock when getting to that scene if they were sensitive souls. Plus the sheer emotion of the scene is likely to overcome any capacity for rational analysis or whatever.

Scarred is a pretty heavy word but Megumi Ogata's scream when Shinji see's the mangled Unit 02 in EoE gives me chills. Was perfectly done.

Every time Shinji screams I smile. Seriously, Shinji should get an award for "Best Screamer"* in an Anime.
