^ Thirded. MoS had better battles, yes, but was really no better than Superman Returns.
And yes, Spacey was a terrifically evil Luthor. Better than Gene Hackman, if I can go so far as to say that.

Zatoichi the Outlaw

One of my favorite films in the series, top 5 for sure. Rentaro Mikuni is great as the villain and the cinematography was excellent, not surprising considering it was done by Kazuo Miyagawa of Rashomon and Ugetsu fame.

The sixth sense
I was expecting something like "This all happened inside your head" type of ending, but I was surprised that it was something completely different.

Just watched Godzilla, the original one from 1954, I think this was my first time watching it, actually. I thought it was quite enjoyable actually, albeit there were some moments where the special effects were quite obvious, but even then, to me, that has a bit of a charm to it.

I saw World War Z last night. It was... off, somehow. It felt like a bunch of stuff had been cut out. Didn't really work.

I refuse to see it on principle. The book is such a massive favorite of mine (and gift from a dear cousin), that I refuse to sully my thoughts with the movie.

The difference is that the book is composed of several differing accounts, each of which details a different' person's account of the zombie apocalypse. It's very strong at points because it comes from several different perspectives and each story thread has its own weight and implications. The film is a completely different story about the usual everyman-and-family-in-apocalypse. So if it feels like a bunch of stuff has been cut out, that's because they cut EVERYTHING out. Also the book was much more realistic in its account, whereas the film chooses the miracle vaccine route.

I believe that the author himself green-lit the changes, and made the zombies run like wolves, deciding that it would be difficult to fit everything in the book into a movie.

To be frank, adapting a popular book to film is difficult.

I thought Dune was a scifi classic?

Yes the saga is, but like what Xard said the film was a terrible mess that it scarred Lynch for life (using Smithee in the credits to reinforce his opposition to producer meddling).

However, when the books were faithfully retold again in a SciFy miniseries it became one of the top-rated shows in that channel.

I've read the book.

I meant it felt like the film had been heavily edited down from a much longer version.

The twist was actually pretty clever, just totally out of place in an adaptation of Brooks' book (which isn't actually that good, just deserving of a truer adaptation)

The book World War Z is the zombie TV show I want to see! Would make an amazing anthology series with each episode being the writer interviewing another survivor & we get to see their tale. One episode is an action fest soldiers vs. zombies. The next is a gritty survival tale of a young 10 year boy alone in a city. The third is two people finding love as they hole away in a shelter for months on end. Etc etc. Not The Walking Dead which I'd argue is a failed TV show.

The movie is okay. It's an average blockbuster with one or two moments that really work. Nothing special. Brad Pitt has to do one of these big mega-blockbusters every few years so he can keep doing interesting work like Inglorious Basterds, Burn After Reading, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford, The Tree of Life, etc.

P.S. The more I think about it the more I realize "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is the worst Spidey film yet. It's not as flat & dull from beginning to end as the first reboot was & it is just as unfocused & all over the place as "Spider-Man 3" was but it's just a morally reprehensible version of everything Peter Parker should not be. Plus the lazy writing has shrunk everything in the Spider-Man universe to "it came from Oscorp."

Don't usually bother posting in this thread but actually watched something that's worth a mention. Randomly going through HBO GO's library and picked something out at random to put on while doing other stuff. Movie is called "Frequently Asked Questions/Time Travel", kind of a nerdy sort of comedy (sort of in the vein of Big Bang Theory, where nerds don't actually act that way but other people think they do) but was still pretty entertaining.

I watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

I thought the movie overall was okay-ish with good action scenes. I didn't like

SPOILER: Show
that Gwen Stacy died. It just felt, I dunno, wrong. She says "This is my decision to make!" when Peter didn't want her in danger and then she helps save New York and defeat Electro. Couldn't they have just left it at that? No, they had to go with the usual thing where, after a woman succeeds at something, a more terrible event happens to take away her happiness. It's one of those cases where the woman's death is more integral to the hero's drama than anything else.

She was going to Oxford. Peter was supporting her in that decision and then BAM she's dead for no real reason. She didn't NEED to die, dammit! It would have been a perfectly good movie without her death. It's really just another emotional arc for Peter, where he has to overcome the guilt after the deaths of Captain Stacy and Gwen and be Spider-Man because it's his responsibility and blah blah blah.

I don't think they needed to hammer the point in with her death. If this is so that they can bring in MJ to be his main love interest, I don't really see the point. To keep up consistency with the comics? Because they couldn't think up any ideas for Gwen's character in the upcoming movies? Because Spider-Man can't go to England? Then don't make it Oxford, make it some other college!

I usually don't have such a big problem with stuff where this kind of thing happens. It's just the context of the whole thing that makes killing off Gwen Stacy seem like a poor decision.

I don't think the upcoming Spider-Man movies will be very good. Except maybe Sinister Six, if it's handled well and is geared more towards comedy than action-drama. I'm also looking forward to X-Men: DoFP because First Class and The Wolverine were pretty great.

In preparation for Godzilla 2014, I've done a marathon of the 90s films.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Mothra
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla

And today I'll be watching Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I may also watch some of my 60s and 70s favorites before May 16. My opinion: King Ghidorah is excellent, Mechagodzilla II and Mothra are mediocre with Mechagodzilla II being slightly better, and SpaceGodzilla is absolute garbage. I have found memories of Destoroyah though but it's been a long time since I've seen it, so we'll see how that one holds up.

I took another rewatch of Pacific Rim. Ok now I see the similarities to Evangelion. Like Makos flash back. Most notably Mako's last name of Mori being one letter different then Mari. Although I don't see the reference of Mako to Rei beyond her bond to Pentacost and the ends of her hair being blue.

All the references in mind its still pretty original for a live action Hollywood movie. And it's definitely my second favorite movie. Favorite American made movie though.
