Bigger avatar, no image in signature?

I'm thinking of changing some things around to streamline things, and I want to do away with signature images. In exchange, I want to increase the avatar image size to 150x150.

Thoughts?

I think it would be good if you also up the avatar file size so we can use basic animated stuff too.

Yeah, I find large signatures of any sort, image or text, to be very annoying, so I could definitely get behind this.

I finally get a picture in my signature space and then Em decides to discuss a change.

Three points

1. Plus wouldnt it just make the board boring with no pictures in the signatures????

2. And Why do I have a bad feeling about this

3. So I say no

Quite to the contrary, one example of an active board with no images in signature is Anime Nation. Quite excellent in its effectively streamlined forum.

I dont like anime nation fourm for serveral reasons that would be to long to explain.

I find trying to skim read the stuff on the anime antion really hard where as here I can skim read quite fast and no headache.

In my opinion anime nations fourms look awful hence why I dont go there.

Its a lot easier here to see who is writing the message than it is there.

Eh. I wouldn't really be too fussed about no sig images, but I think 150x150 avatars might be a bit too big.

That sounds okay.

I dont like image signatures personally. Text signatures are okay as long as they arent long and annoying, like guitar tabs *coughcougheverclearboardscoughcough*

the only thing I really use image signatures for is when I'm browsing to know whos post is who. I can use avatars for that...

Personally I hate AnimeNation's forum setup. I much prefer this one.

I like sig images IF they are limited in size like the avatar. Keep it slim and I see no issues. The billboard sized images should be banned.

AMV org has a good rule where the sig pic is limited to a certain height. That way it doesn't dominate a post that is one line long.

If you look at AN, sure there is no sig pics but some sig texts are larger than an image.

Go for it. There are way too many giant sigs that don't link to anywhere on this board. I have nothing against sigs if they are small and have meaning but too many of them on this forum are pointless now.

But you see, text doesn't take long to load at all. Long text sigs are more tolerable as they don't waste time loading.

From a bandwidth perspective I won't argue that. However, I am being elitist and assuming everone has high-speed internet.

I am more concerned with sigs (text and pics) that are visually large and annoying to me.

If you limit the sig pic dimensions, then it should also shrink in size therefore decreasing bandwidth usage (although not as effectively as removing it altogether).

The problem with large signatures, graphical or otherwise (as opposed to large icons on the side), is that they make it much harder to read forum threads as a continuous piece of writing. Every few sentences, you're assaulted with someone effectively jumping up and down in your face, shouting "Look at me! Look at me!"

This wouldn't be very polite in person, and it isn't on the Internet either.

I can understand the need to link to external sites in a way that draws more attention than using phpBB's "homepage" icon, but that's about it -- and even this gets abused more often than not.

I agree. Picturoid signatures disrupt the flow of the forum text. But instead of increasing the size of the avatars we can upload, how about increasing the size of the file we can upload? :)

Would be neat if we could have little animations going on in the left column.

100x100 is a nice size.

Since the lefthand column is about 185 pixels wide, avatars could be increased to that without streching the page out, which would be quite nice and not really affect the layout.

AN is a good example of a forum without image sigs.

I say, go for it.
