CGI for the most part is a joke in itself, and not a necessary ingredient for an Evangelion adaptation.

I myself would like to see an Evangelion adaptation done in the style of a Heisei-era Godzilla film. An opening narration is done through Eva's somber white-kanji-on-black title cards as cicadas chirp, then, bam, there's a man in an Eva-01 suit and a Shamshel puppet standing across from each other in a scale model Tokyo-3. We hear the Eva's roar, and the title appears; Neon Genesis: Evangelion vs. Sachiel x Shamshel x Ramiel: All-Out Angel Attack!!!.

I'm not sure if you're kidding, but personally I would actually be entertained by such a movie just because I love both Evangelion and Godzilla.
