I watched Fruits Basket. A bit comic, a bit serious (about familial relationships), and a bit romantic. I was really quite enjoying it, but then it rather suddenly ended, with a suitably dramatic few scenes, but none of the main issues resolved. Still, it made for a nice season ending - except, that's it.

Well, that's what you get when a show is made when the manga isn't even half-way through (see Kare Kano, FMA (2003), Bokura ga Ita, ya-da, ya-da, ya-da...). So inevitably I read the manga to get the whole story. Well, first I noticed that the drama that ends the series was (a) moved from an earlier spot to make the "ending", and (b) greatly expanded, in a way that had major plot holes and was not really in character either. Such is life. However, the manga is really rather long, and very slow. It does have a properly completed story, though the dénouement is somewhat underwhelming after the build-up, and there are no loose ends of consequence. But, boy, did it drag through the later stages.

So, I ended up preferring the clearly incomplete anime to the fully realised manga version of the story. Enjoy it, as far as it goes, because it's pretty good - but just be aware that you'll end up dumped at the side of the road.

Then I watched Nabari no Ō. Sold as a ninja show, starts as a ninja show, forgets about that after a few episodes. I was pointed to it as a sort of Eva-Naruto cross-over; I know nothing of Naruto, so I can't comment on that aspect, but the comparison with Eva is pretty slight. The MC, Miharu, is terminally apathetic at first, even when being attacked, but is fairly soon shown to have a cute devilish streak, and then he finds something he wants to do - even though it's not what anyone else wants him to do, and he doesn't want to do what they want. So, conflict there is, but really not much angst. It made a nice story, with little in the way of underlying moral or lesson, and I liked the pastel water-colour backgrounds, and the character designs (in spite of their being a bit like anorexic stick insects). Gently recommended, but don't expect anything earth-shattering.

Twin Peaks Season 3
I’ve never managed to finish the second season, or watch the movie. But I love David Lynches vision and worlds. So having 18 hours of undiluted Lynch anchored in reality due to Frost’s writing is a delicious treat. It’s a very simple story told at a snails pace. But it’s filled with lovable characters and mind-blowing Lynchian moments. It’s surprisingly understandable all the way through, only at the very end it sky rockets of into metaphorical heights I am unable to decipher. A bit like ONE MORE FINAL. This show was a treat. It’s amazing this is allowed to exist. This is exactly what I needed. Might be too slow for some, though. Also, the soundtrack is amazing.

Stranger Things
For any one who has watched JJ adam's Super 8 and felt that it fell short you gotta watch this series because its everything Super 8 wishes it was and I don't want to give spoilers other than to say its dark, deep emotional and pulls no punches and its one of these few series which I feels pays true homage to the 80's the look and feel is spot on as is the attention to detail and characters rooms feel like there actuality lived in and not part of a display to bring up nostalgia with everything being perfect and crisp.

If you aren't calling in to work sick in order to marathon Stranger Things 2 and eat pizza all day, well then you're just not living life correctly.

Netflix's German series Dark
Superficially looks similar to Stranger Things but is a very different animal. (Some are saying closer to Twin Peaks which I have not seen)
Much darker. How fucked up some of the characters are very slowly becomes apparent.
1 character I was fond of early on I hated with every fiber of my being at the end.
If you like 12 Monkeys (the movie), you will probably like this.

I've binged about 2 seasons worth of Daria since the weekend, and I'm feeling weirdly nostalgic over land lines. Also, deadpan snark is a thing that you carry with you into adulthood.

Man Devilman Cry-Baby was so good. I loved it made me cry, I really hope that do season two and shows where it goes from here.

I appreciated the little nods to Evangelion too.

Finally getting around to watching Stranger Things. 4 Episodes into it, and this is either going to be the best show ever or the absolute worst show ever. No in-betweens. But what I've seen is damn impressive so far. It almost makes me forget that I'm watching American television. (Almost. I still feel that the American philosophy to serialized television might come in and ruin it someday.)

I'm curious to know, but what is the American philosophy to serialized television (at least, within the last 5-10 years or thereabouts)?

Scripted American television basically exists only to achieve longevity, and not to tell stories with beginnings, middles, and ends. Every TV producer has wanted to make the next M*A*S*H* series within terms of both longevity and syndication ever since they found out how successful M*A*S*H* was. This wouldn't be such an issue if every TV show stopped teasing its audience with promises of character developments and unfolding story arcs that are forced by arbitrary cliff-hanger season finales which ultimately lead nowhere, and are all abandoned as soon as the TV show becomes unpopular and is either canceled or is given an abrupt ending.

Stranger Things almost makes me forget that it might have such an ending.

About a week ago, I checked out on Netflix the pilot episode of Voltron: Legendary Defender.

Beautiful animation and that's a given since the studio behind it also did Legend of Korra. And the CGI mecha action blended seamlessly with the 2D anime-like character designs and backgrounds. I have never seen The Walking Dead so it would be hard to compare Steven Yeun's Keith to his Glenn but he did alright. Josh Keaton's Shiro is impressive given I had only previously heard Keaton as young Hercules in the 1997 Disney movie. Also, given who they got to voice Pidge, I don't think it's a well disguised secret that she's disguising herself as male but it does make for some interesting "coming out" theme for when the big reveal comes. Allura is definitely attractive and oozes similarities to Katara in terms of maternal glue of the team. Lance reeks of Sokka mannerisms despite myself not being a fan of this rumored Keith/Lance "romance" that I hear about so many times because if it happened between Korrasami, then the producers will definitely try to agenda their way through another project. Since I had so long ago seen the "original" Voltron when it was in Toonami, I am hoping beyond all hope that they try to honor the Keith/Allura fans, if any.

Stranger Things

Binged the whole thing last weekend after a friend pestered me about it for a year. Gotta be honest, this show has given me the worst post series emptiness I've had after finishing a show. I haven't wanted more episodes of something this bad since Firefly. Since last weekend I've re-watched the show twice. Now I've fallen into watching other peoples reactions of the show on youtube, something up to this point I've never understood much less done. I'm pretty desperate.
It's difficult in times like these; ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality.
It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical.
Yet I cling to them because I believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.

Due to my growing interest in the western genre, I'm working through the netflix original Godless, and it's pretty good so far. Jeff Daniels steals every scene he's in, but I'm also getting to like the sheriff hunting him more and more.

Currently watching the second season of Versailles, and beginning to watch the Roseanne revival.

Versailles is as visually stunning as it was with the first season, with the story being even more binge worthy.

Roseanne on the other hand, the show is wonderful, and I'm glad they brought it back. I haven't laughed that much at anything in a long time, and I'm glad the show was brought back ,as it was a favorite of mine growing up, even though I was only alive and able to watch it for a small portion of its original run.

The Terror (adaptation of Dan Simmons' novel) is fantastic. The best television series I've seen in years.
