I wish I could say I was surprised, but...

Anyway, too bad. For all its flaws, Pacific Rim was fun and I wouldn't have minded more of it.

Yes, that's Kotono Mitsuishi. FujiTV is going for maximum giggles.

EDIT: Allegedly the 15sec promo has Ode To Joy playing, but I can't be bothered to get around the region lock to confirm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxMma6pN3fc

I found it was fun enough to watch through, but left me with no interest in having more. But I'm just a boring old fart, as they say.

I hadn't emotionally climaxed so much since hearing Nadia music for the first time in the 6 min Eva Q preview. Those commercials are EPIC.

EDIT: Both commercials are in the Twitter link.

Guess this is the perfect time to say the sequel is back on.

http://deadline.com/2016/02/pacific-rim-2-directed-by-steven-deknight-spartacus-creator-legendary-pictures-guillermo-del-toro-1201708221/

I've never seen 'Spartacus' so I don't know what to think of Steven DeKnight taking over direction from Guillermo Del Toro. On the brighter side, DeKnight is apparently taking over Del Toro's script and won't be adjusting it much because Del Toro is still going to stay closely involved with the project.

Will it keep the "Del Toro" Aesthetic though? The grinding gears, the mostly practical effects, the over the top creature designs?

Depends on how much influence he has as the producer, I guess.

Fingers crossed for a female lead this time.

The new Jaegers are VERY colorful.

Now has anyone asked Pacific Rim 2 director Steven S. DeKnight if he's seen Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Not sure what to think of the first trailer for Pacific Rim 2. Feels very Power Rangers-like.
Still, as long as they keep making these and leave Eva alone it's all good.
I also appreciate the clear move towards having the action take place during the day. A simple way to differentiate from the first film (which is a great movie) but it does make this one feel more cartoonish.

Mech on mech battles. Not bad. I was kind of hoping that the sequel would be nothing but inter-continental wars with Jeagers, but that monster still looks cool.

I wish the whole "we created monsters" thing was an actual thing in the movie and not just a cool tagline.

Isn't Pacific Rim just Evangelion with less existential crisis and mommy issues?

Never seen the movie, just looking for clarification.

I like that they're embracing the more colorful aesthetic. I agree that Pacific Rim is the Eva live action we needed, moreso than an actual adaptation of Eva. It's tapping into a genre that Eva largely defined, and creating a new franchise for a new audience. This is probably the best way to go about it, really.

IOW, with less of what makes Eva. I think if you watch it looking for a live-action Eva equivalent (even Rebuild) you will be disappointed - which is not to say it's bad on its own terms.

If studios are going to misunderstand Eva on very core principles, it's best for them to do it under the title "Pacific Rim." As Pacific Rim, it's unique and wonderful. As an Eva title, I would be somewhat upset.
