The Fan of The Death

I noticed this some time ago, but I couldn't find any kind of reference related to this, that's why I'm asking here.

I'm talking about the fan which appears behind Kaji at the time of his death:

Image

In "Death Note", we can see it a few minutes before Kira's death:

And then, in Silent Hill 2 (the videogame):

Image

I can't remember exactly when it takes place, but we know "death" is sort of the main subject in the wholoe story.
In the two previous cases (Kaji and Kira) they were both waiting for their death.

What do you think?
Is it a reference to an old move or something like that or Anno just did it because it looks nice?

I always thought the Death Note example was a reference to Eva. Never noticed the Silent Hill one, though.

I took a screencap from the SH 2 teaser. I guess it takes place in the "prision stage"... and I think I've seen it in SH 3 too.

There could be a huge possibility that Akira Yamoka watched Evangelion :P but I'm not sure at all.

I know in the case of Silent Hill, it was done simply because it was "unnerving" and "invoked thoughts of cycles."

It's an additional horror element added solely for the Korean audiences.

Thanks! That was the answer I was looking for :)
I'd never imagine that it was called "fan death". I can't believe people thought a fan could kill you because of a vortex which sucks the oxygen :/

If we want to search for this kind of imagery, there's a scene in Total Recall (yes, the Arnie film) where the baddie cuts of air supply to some sector, threatening its inhabitants with death. For dramatic effect, it's shown as the ductwork system's fans are slowing down.

I'm pretty sure Dr. Nick wasn't being serious, albeit it's interesting.

I like the 4 theory better myself

But, but, but the fan behind Kaji clearly has more than four blades.

In the OP of Noir, Mireille, who is played by Misato's seiyuu, Kotono Mitsuishi,
appears with the Fan of Death:

Was this intended as an in-joke reference to the popular, but erroneous, fan theory that Misato shot Kaji?

But it makes sense. The sound of the timer as a countdown to death.
Perhaps someone used this "urban legend" in a movie and then it became popular in this kind of scenes related to death.

I'm pretty sure that most people don't really believe the "fan death" theory anymore; Wikipedia said that it was simply an urban legend. All cultures have little quirky things like that. ;)
