Was Shinji a coward?

Shinji is easily the most hated of the Evangelion characters beacuse he's "sucha wuss" "So wimpy" "He never got it on with Rei!" etc. etc.

Granted, he wasn't the most easy going kid. He had a pretty screwed up realtionship with people, and he was very insecure with himself.
But was he really a coward?
I think he showed a lot of courage given the situation he was thrust into.
People are always on his case because "he just doesn't shut up and pilot the damn eva!"
But He pilots the Evangelion a lot more often then i think a coward could.
It seems to me his fear is reasonable given the task. "go get in the cockpit and save us from the angels kid. and hurry up!"

Remember Touji's reaction to becoming a pilot in the manga?
It's a scary task. And obviously brings with it a load of mental trauma.

So in the end what do you think?

Shinji, messed up but brave kid or screwed up litttle coward?

Shinji was definitely not a coward, nor was he spineless, this generalization comes mainly from fanfiction, I think. With Asuka insulting him constantly, and him saying "I'm sorry" over and over. In reality, a lot of the times Asuka insulted him, or anyone else for that matter, he stood up for himself.

Everybody that has felt the same way he did will understand. He didn't run away because he's afraid to die, he runs away because he doesn't believe in his habilities, he doesn't believe he is useful, he thinks that everything he does is to harm people.

Maybe in EoE it's a little annoying that Misato had to drag Shinji to get him to the eva, but anyway... :roll:

PS: i think that everybody should name the post as the topic they want to talk about, in this case "is Shinji a coward?", because "God your annoying!" it's a little confusing.

Shinji merely uses advoidance to deal with his problems like many people, though few people can identify with piloting a gigantic purple cyborg every day risking your life for a purpose you don't believe with. However, I (in one point in life) can identify with the fact that he is really depressed but is too scared to actually kill himself, so he just kind of drifts along in his own little world. And other people can probably connect with that too.

Shinji is the representation of the stereotyped otaku who prefers simply to be in his own mind and avoids the pain in life. I don't think he is a coward, I mean fighting gargantuan angels from heaven with telekenytic powers should be worth some points, but I think labeling him as a coward is unfair.

Twice Shinji refused the comfort of the womb in order to return to reality. That's two more times than I would have. He's no coward.

Anyways, a lot of people seem to forget that Shinji is more or less a child still.
I mean, he is only 14. People can't expect a child to be able to deal with such responsibilities and NOT have problems with it.

In no way do I think he's a coward. He handled his situations the best way he knew how, and considering that he hardly had anyone to guide him, he did quite well.

It doesn't seem like incest. Its a freak situation. Most people worry bout having sex with ur sister, but in Evangelion. Nooooooooooooooo.
