Steven Spielberg is my role-model. Not creatively speaking, though he's had a very good track record, but within terms of networking and communication among studios, actors, and crew. As a result, producers like him, child actors like him, and other unheard of Hollywood relationships formed from his techniques as a communicator. Every director, I don't care who they think they are, should learn to adapt his qualities in those arenas.

Beyond that, and creatively speaking (with no order):
Stanley Kubrick
Satoshi Kon
Hideaki Anno
Hayao Miyazaki
Cohen Brothers
Terry Gilliam
Francis Ford Copolla
John Ford
Clint Eastwood
Quentin Tarantino
Micheal Curtiz
Mamoru Hosoda
Shinichiro Watanabe
Alfred Hitchcock

I would say about one fifth of what Jimbo said.
"Now, from Nature we obtain abundant information about ourselves, and precious little about others. About the woman you clasp in your arms, can you say with certainty that she does not feign pleasure? About the woman you mistreat, are you quite sure that from abuse she does not derive some obscure and lascivious satisfaction? Let us confine ourselves to simple evidence: through thoughtfulness, gentleness, concern for the feelings of others we saddle our own pleasure with restrictions, and make this sacrifice to obtain a doubtful result." -The Divine Marquis

"I agree Hans, but we have talked about those anal fisting analogies." -Werner Herzog

From briefly carousing everyone’s lists I see that Kurosawa, the Coen Brothers, Spielberg, Coppola, Miyazaki, Nolan, Godard, and Kar-wai are the most popular.

Perhaps I should develop some sort of consensus list?

George Lucas, the guy that directed Shoot 'Em Up, the guy that directed the Jason Bourse trilogy, and the guy that directed Equilibrium; I know very few directors let alone like them.
