So we all know that Captain Asuka "Red Beard" Shikinami is packing a brand new stylin' eyepatch for the upcoming 3.0 film. However What is she hiding under that eye patch?

One hypothesis that has been floating around is angel contamination and I think I may have found some evidence for this hypothesis. (If this has been mentioned before in a different thread then please feel free to delete this thread and perm-ban me into Oblivion.)

Anyway take a look at this.

Asuka's eye right before getting sling-shotted into the blue Rei face:

Shiver me retinas! Thar be some nasty eye infect'n if eye'd ever seen it!

But really that ain't no ordinary iris, the change is pretty obvious. Possible contamination? Maybe.

The characters' eyes change constantly throughout the movie depending on the artist. It's most noticeable in the scenes added for 2.22.

Those spikes are quite weird though
ran1: Oh gosh this sentence gave me an internet boner. You're so tsundere.
Mugwump: Goddamn it, Xard! Take me in your arms, you magnificent sex god bastard!
And don't forget to wear the Ran mask.
Eva Yojimbo: You really are the Otaku equivalent of a Catholic and Jew rolled up into one giant dakimakura of guilt.
Gob Hobblin: Sanctimonious, subtly racist, vaguely misogynist, somehow says something while at the same time saying...nothing, really, at all....

Nice, Xard. That's nice.

This could be shadows/drawing style related.

I was just wondering because I don't remember Asuka's eyes being drawn like that with black "spikes" before but then again I haven't really paid attention

I didn't mean to be rude. I just wanted to point out that eyes, like hair, combat skills and young people, are something that you just can't expect to be realistic in anime.

rebuild is a remake of evangelion, so its sure that because its a remake, it must be changed...
Humans can easily explain the cycle of life because they witnessed it, and they can tell it's story,
But no one can explain why a human need to die because the people who witnessed it can't never tell the tale.

While the whole Angel infection thing definitely seems a possibility (puke!), I'd still consider this to be mere results of the drawing process.

The proble is, that we as fans tend to overanalyze stuff like that, because whike waiting for our next fixm we need to occupy our minds with something.

More often than not, that kind of speculation over such tiny stuff will lead to nothin'.

The thing that caught my eye is how constricted her pupil is.

Either:
1. It's really bright outside.
2. This is a visual clue about her being in evil mode (Angelic contamination or something). Pinpoint pupils can be pretty creepy.
3. She suffered some permanent brain damage when her Entry Plug got crushed. I'm quitting Rebuild if this is the case. Hardships are one thing, but having a named character around only for the sake of torture porn is where i draw the line. Not to mention that it would make any plight Shinji faces seem like a non-issue.
4. She's on some pretty strong sedatives that work in a simiar fashion to opiate narcotics and the like.

Of course, this may all be irrelevant, since it's entirely likely that most of the shots from the trailer won't make it into the final movie.

The 3.0 Asuka´s eys kind of look like the eyes Sadamoto used to draw, despite being simplified.

Blank eyes are meant to be scary or disturbed by something.

The tendrils are probably just shadows and yes, the pupils are constricted but there is more than one reason for that.
As you said, she could be looking into a lightsource, it could be because she can only use this eye.She might be on some drugs (either stimulants or sedatives due to either pain or exhaustion from her injuries etc..

Without any other material, we simply can't know more.

I think we can take Lelouche's Geass eye and Mio Sakamoto's magical eye as read.

I wouldn't give anything in the teaser much thought. Much less how a characters eye is drawn.

The animation of the 3.0 teaser while good is of a lesser quality than that in the film 2.0. These teasers are made before the film's actual script is written so what ever is in them is more about the Khara team grasping at concepts than having anything truly concrete to base the shots on.

Anno pretty much says "3.0 will have... Kaworu. The descent to Terminal Dogma from Episode 24...i think. Um.. there will be some helicopters. Uh...Mari is gonna be naked. Lots of Reis. There will be an Eva 08...make it grey for now, I can change my mind when we get there. And...uh....let me see.... oh, Asuka with an Eyepatch. Draw it"

Everything in the teaser is going to reanimated, embellished, or changed come the release of Eva 3.0. I would not be surprised if Eva 08 looks vastly different and Asuka doesn't have an eyepatch- maybe just a clamp over the eye socket or something.

Though Mari will be naked at some point. I think that's a safe bet.

Or it is just going to make a brief appearance 10 seconds or so before the credits roll
