Not sure how to feel about this, but I'm actually skeptical it'll be good. Here's hoping it will be though.

But will it make me cry as much as the anime? That's the entire measure of success here.

This.

@oO: I know what you mean. Gunbuster is one of the few anime's to actually make shed some tears. Hard work and guts "Coachy." :sniffle:

do want. if they flash out the story a bit more this could be good. the shōjo style of the cover doesn't appeal much to me though. i'd prefer it to look like the anime.

80s moe is out, 00s moe is in.

Personally, I don't mind it - Noriko's character design in the OVA always wigged me out given the stylization of her face compared to the realism of her genitalia.

Now why would you be, given the history of fantastic spin-off manga based on other successful Gainax franchises?[/sarcasm]

Awesome.

The manga really could fix the show´s horrible pacing a bunch.

I´m looking forward to this.

@Saltyjoe:You sure?

By pacing I mean the time that passed when Noriko and Amano were travelling in light-speed.

I'm not expecting much from the author who... Well, probably hasn't done much work besides porn up to this point. I can't find anything on this "Kabocha" -guy.

And just look at the art, I realize that Gunbuster is over twenty years old and that it needs to be made marketable to modern tastes, but modern tastes are evidently worse.

By pacing I mean the time that passed when Noriko and Amano were travelling in light-speed.

This statement could potentially be very controversial, depending on it's exact implications.

By pacing I ACTUALLY meant the ACTUAL pacing of the show.(Excluding the Gunbuster/Diebuster end)

Do not want.

@InstrumentalityOne: what horrible pacing are you refering to?

Don't judge a book from the cover, it could be nice.
ANN updated the news page to mention "Comic Gunbuster" published in 1989, I always wondered how good it was, I never saw it. Does anyone have it?
So let’s make a wish.

Probably the middle 2 episodes with Smith and stuff.

show gets considerably more serious in ep 3 and Smith gets introduced and killed in short span of time, yes, but he was never character we were ment to care for.

I thought the pacing was fine. Like Xard said, Smith isn't someone we're supposed to get attached to anyway. He's more a fulfillment of a trope tied to Noriko, a character device (the tragic “I let you down” guilt carry the burden phase), rather than a character in his own right. Either way that's more of an issue with characterization than pacing.

Sadamoto's Evangelion adaptation could have been nice, too. Adapting Gainax originals to comic format doesn't strike me as being a very good idea, even when the work in question is twenty-some years old.
