Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

Maybe I will give Kare Kano a try. I am familiar with many films by Studio Ghibli, and seen films such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, and the Tale of the Princess Kaguya. I’ve decided to make a list for my own mental well being and for others too, The End of Evangelion Rel...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

Recently I have been attending therapy. I’ve also been doing other things to occupy my time and cultivate my mental garden. Now that I have finally obtained a job I can focus on other things. I understand you guys are not qualified therapist. Nonetheless I feel grateful for your efforts to help. You...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

If you wanna watch Eva without Asuka being quite so brutal[/b], the new movies are really good for that. I met someone at a convention who hated TV Asuka, but really liked the Asuka in the new movies. (I think Asuka even became her favorite character.) Asuka still comes off as a little brash at fir...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

So you finished watching all the remaining episodes? Yes, that was utterly, unconditionally brutal and it doesn't help that the scene is designed to utterly break us as an audience. It further doesn’t help that I suffered a parallel fate. And no, I didn’t watch the remaining episodes because I alre...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

The last third of the series (episode 16 and on) beats her down hard, which is where she won my sympathy. Asuka won my sympathy as well. I truly sympathize with the fact that she wanted to grow up so fast she barely even had a childhood to begin with. Personally I can’t imagine a life devoid of a c...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

Well, to be perfectly honest, I haven't seen all of the show. I decided to skip ahead to 25 and 26. As I said before, I'm staying away from the rest because of Asuka, because she reminds me of my tormentors. Seeing her cause Shinji pain, however justified one says she is, reminds me of how others ca...

Re: Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

It’s really haunting to think, “That could’ve been me.” Which is what I felt watching EoE. True. I did associate myself with him so much that I was having nightmares. Admittedly a habit of mine is sometimes treating fictional characters as an extension of my own personality, including OC’s. On most ...

I completely agree. I believe it is wrong to blame someone for another person’s problems, especially when they are not the root of the issue.

Re: Rei Is Best Waifu

Now that I look back on it, this post I made was in response to how easier it was to tolerate Rei’s behavior over Asuka’s. Sure she may be more tolerant but does that make her a better character? It depends.

The fact I stated “Rei is best waifu” is very hypocritical of me, I understand now.

Re: Asuka isn't Justified

In all seriousness, none of the characters in Evangelion are fully justified either. The motives behind their actions are understandable and relatable. But are they acceptable? Not exactly, especially when their decisions affect others directly, when they make others suffer for their own personal ha...

Message In A Bottle (How the End of Evangelion Traumatized Me & How I Overcame It)

Well, if I'm going to do this, I might as well express it in a way that'll give insight, nothing left out. I'm not afraid to ask for help, who might read this, nor am I afraid of what comments there might be. This is my message in a bottle. The first time I saw the movie The End of Evangel...

Re: End of Evangelion Traumatized Me

Worse still, there’s no epilepsy warning for the movie, and it continued to be, “Not Rated” in the U.S. There’s a quote I like to turn to. “Everything will be alright in the end. If it’s not alright, it’s not the end.” Reflecting upon that, I can find comfort that Shinji and the rest of humanity hav...

No, I cannot. I know I am wrong, but that doesn’t exlude the fact that the movie triggered my PTSD.

Re: The Asuka Langley Soryu in my mind

In 10th grade, I was on the Deans list. I was under the impression that if I got good grades and met my expectations, my peers would admire that kind of talent. But they didn’t. The only difference between me and Asuka was that I recognized I wasn’t blameless. I too had issues of my own which I reac...

Re: Asuka isn't Justified

Now that I think about it, none of the characters actions in the show are necessarily justified. To justify ones actions it to use it as a motive for their behavior. But one thing cannot exclude the other. Justification, no matter how hard one tries, cannot outweigh the consequences of ones actions....

Re: End of Evangelion Traumatized Me

I thank you all who read this, and helped me out. Even though I sometimes keep falling into this hole, it’s getting easier for me to climb out of. In all honesty tho, the US should’ve rated the movie NC-17. Believe it or not, End of Evangelion was at one time rated TV-14. Maybe they should put menta...

Re: End of Evangelion Traumatized Me

One of the ultimate messages of Evangelion is that, “You’re not alone”. And yet the characters say to Shinji that he is the only one in the world who can understand himself. Some people say loneliness is one sided. But in reality it’s two sided. On one hand there are those who say they cannot live a...

If I could place the characters of Evangelion into the cast of the Breakfast Club, disregarding gender for personality, here is what I’d choose. Toji Suzuhara - The Criminal Asuka Langley Soryu - The Princess Kaworu - The Athlete Rei Ayanami - The Brain Shinji Ikari - The Basket Case Gendo Ikari - T...

Re: End of Evangelion Traumatized Me

After hearing the song, “Imagine” by John Lennon, I feel more comfortable on the idea of instrumentality via LCL. In fact, I see the song as a metaphor for LCL. Another concept that lingers is that of perception. Everyone’s perception is limited because their souls are housed within separate bodies ...
