Re: Commentary: General (Episodes 09-18;20-26)

What irks me a bit is the Commentary's current use of the nonstandard spelling "Kiel" instead of correct (and more nautical) "Keel". Is there a quick fix to it? Posted your new comments and thanks for your thanks. In response to your question, I'm not sure. I really don't know m...

Re: Hideaki Anno Exhibition to be held in October

hui: Your ideas about the influences only being works before Anno became a director and didn't work on is logical and explains some otherwise baffling absences. With Utena, I did mean it had direct callbacks and references in NTE/Rebuild, not in the original show or EoE. kuribo: There's a list of m...

Re: Hideaki Anno Exhibition to be held in October

There's one Miyazaki's work I spoted there: "Conan: the Future Boy" (未来少年コナン, Mirai Shōnen Konan). Well, like I said, there's also a bunch of TV shows, which were untranslated at the moment of writing, but remain so no longer! (Still, a complete absence of a single Miyazaki film is...stra...

Re: Hideaki Anno Exhibition to be held in October

^A good idea, probably. Anyway, putting this here: https://twitter.com/catsuka/status/1449847354262237184 . A translated list of films that have supposedly influenced Anno. There's a bunch of interesting omissions (CCA, anything Miyazaki, also honestly 2001/Kubrick who I'm convinced has influenced A...

I like the music.

Edit: Supposedly the trailer(s?) are a pretty direct recreation of the original Kamen Rider OP.

There's also this promotion still:

Re: Commentary: General (Episodes 09-18;20-26)

That's because Tines has consistently commented on one episode every day (barring wiki outages) and has thus managed to cover the remainder of the entire series. Perhaps you could try something similar, or stick to 2-3 scenes per episode per day? It may take a couple of months, but it should all be...

Re: Commentary: General (Episodes 09-18;20-26)

Tines is already nearly finished, what the fuck.

I also intend to comment on every episode, but alas, time's a precious little thing, I have other interests and so I haven't even managed to comment on the second half of 19. I'll try to be a bit quicker in the future.

Re: DUNE

Watched Villeneuve's Dune yesterday. It's a wonderful, beautiful visual feast with dozens of great moments, scenes and direction, with actors who fit their roles surprisingly well (Ferguson and Chalamet were especially great). There's honestly probably not a single bad performance, scene or shot and...

Re: Celebrity RIP Thread

Truly saddening. He was a wonderful actor and a rare talent who breathed life and reality into all of his characters while taking care to not stand out too much, in a way that would hurt the work at large. He also seemed, by all accounts, to be a genuinely great human being, who cared about the peop...

Re: Why Shinji and Mari DID NOT end up as a couple: Explained

Kaworu is an angel disguised in human form so a humans gender and sexuality mean absolutely nothing to him! He loves Shinji for his humanity he offers him his understanding, that manifests as love or just friendship either way it’s the same feeling. That's not necessarily false, but the way their i...

Re: Why Shinji and Mari DID NOT end up as a couple: Explained

24 has Shinji and Kaworu sharing a bath, Kaworu taking Shinji's hand and Shinji blushing, if that's not homoerotic, then I don't know what is, lol.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

Is there specific thing you had in mind here? Like some of the cuts in the movie do probably rely on audience filling in the blanks with their knowledge of the TV series, but some aspects might not actually be results of cuts and instead what people on this forum used to refer to as "lolTomino...

Re: The possible meta-commentary of Asuka's NTE backstory

I think Asuka's backstory is absolutely meant to be metatextual, but I'd say it's more of a reference to her role as the "famous Eva girl" who's constantly cloned through merchandise, but I'd honestly have to think a bit more on that. I do think NTE taking away some of her "humanity&q...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

First Gundam honestly holds up better than most anything Tomino did after IMHO, and the movies cut out a fair bit of filler and such from the TV show on top of that (Some of which I like but still). Based on everything I've heard about the TV show (and the fact most Gundam fans implore people to st...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

^I actually just watched the original MSG movie trilogy by Tomino on Netflix and was...pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them, especially after my not-very-fond memory of Turn A's first episode. They still had a lot of problems (them being condensed versions of a longer TV show came off clear...

Re: 3.0 + 1.0 Reactions

Very well articulated (as usual), I agree with pretty much all of what you said. A-arigato...(honestly can't say I'm good at articulating, though). I agree re: NTE being harder to assess-I think part of that is also due to how it's not really simplistic (its themes are so closely interconnected and...
