It's not just the Mari backstory there. There were a lot of things that sound like they were inspired by the manga. Did Anno really write this all by himself? With all the mixed messages this movie is seemingly sending, it almost feels like there were multiple people all writing this and throwing different ideas into the movie, resulting in a weird disjointed mish-mash of events. I.e. too many cooks in the kitchen.

So a movie series that was all about rejecting escapism, ends with the main character embracing escapism by literally hitting the reset button and going to a different world, rather than accepting things for how they are in their world and trying to make the best of them.
