Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

This episode was good but felt awfully fast paced to me. Like I was surprised how quickly we went from those girls joining the school to already trying to kill people. Is Witch from Mercury the one where one of its characters punches someone so hard they get brain damage? Witch From Mercury is the o...

I haven't gotten into Aquarion stuff yet myself, but I seem to remember people having mixed feelings about Evol.

Lain rules btw.

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

As great as Berserk 1997 is, it cuts quite a bit of graphic material from the manga (As well as completely gutting the prologue arc and the ending to the Golden Age arc) that they were simply never going to be allowed to air on television. I never saw the later adaptations but they don't have a grea...

Re: Celebrity RIP Thread

What I'll always remember about Lance Reddick are his big expressive eyes. Any time he shot that famous glare of his, it was like he could intimidate the universe itself and you weren't sure the universe wouldn't step back in hesitation.

Re: Shin Kamen Rider

Most Kamen Rider shows are pretty interchangable; if you're a fan of anime I would suggest Kamen Rider Ryuki. This was a deeply influential work that inspired mega hits like Fate Stay Night Do you have a source on this? I don't doubt Nasu being a Kamen Rider fan generally, but Ryuki airing only a y...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

I skipped on Build Real since I thought the pre-Rerise Build series were all bad enough to begin with and could not imagine the live action format not making it somehow worse.

Re: Midori's hair [SPOILER]

she'd also probably not want to think too much about how she saw her family die. I think Midori's pink hair has been recontextualized by this short as a "scar" of sorts for her. She probably is type that is reminded of the event that killed her family and nearly killed her every time she ...

Re: -46h (GENERAL) [SPOILER]

-46h really reminded me of
SPOILER: Show
the Neon Genesis Impacts short from the Animator Expo. Midori is slightly less random survivor than the unfortunate Impacts girls, but its nice to see the ground level impact of these apocalyptic mecha battles and such on civilians from time to time.

Re: -46h (GENERAL) [SPOILER]

I'm also in the camp that doesn't really want or need the timeskip filled. If anything it seems like it would damage the disorientation that 3.0 is built around. It sounds like people were expecting something like Lost's "New Man in Charge" short which was released with the DVD set of that...

Re: What anime are you watching right now? Summer 2016 to now

I started watching Overman King Gainer, the last of these mecha series from Tomino I have left to see. So far these early episodes have been fairly hectic in pacing as expected, though its kind of interesting to see such a snowy setting in a mecha series (Only other one that even comes to mind is VO...

Re: Last Movie You Watched

I think there was a fairly huge step up in writing quality for Way of Water tbh. I mean its still a blockbuster film but basically a lot of the elements that I thought were lacking in the first film were all largely fixed here thanks to the addition of the character of Spider and his reasonably divi...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

I just caught up to G-Witch myself and yeah, what a heck of a ending! It's like Suletta has turned out to be, idk, Todd from Breaking Bad or something. It's a very different dynamic from previous "sociopathic" Gundam protagonists like Heero or Mikazuki at any rate. Wild stuff. I'm ...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

I wouldn't even say its shade necessarily, but it IS a very Zeta-esque bit of character development for the show that's somewhat of a lead-in to Zeta.

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

Thinking about it, I almost wonder if Nina's character isn't supposed to be riff on the female characters from Zeta Gundam being uh, flippers. That show at least has lolPaptimus mindhax stuff people can point to to justify it (As unconvincing as those arguments may be), but the 90's OVAs downplay Ne...

I'll never understand the stuff with Nina's character at the end of 0083. One of the most forced plot twists in this entire franchise.

Re: Would you consider EoE an example of high culture?

The Seventh Seal does not seem to be on an especially different level than Star Wars to me at all. All the gags with Death cutting down trees or whatever and causing goofy mischief seem straight out of Bugs Bunny to me, and are far more farcical than any Jar Jar Binks gag that people online complain...

Re: Gundam (In All Its Incarnations) Mk. II

I have so far refused to watch Doan, but yeah, been a fun year. If you generally like Yas' take on First Gundam (Either The Origin manga or OVA) it's very much in line with those. I should also specify what I mean by "hesitating to call it good"; this is not meant to say that I'm having a...

Re: Would you consider EoE an example of high culture?

I don't understand why any of you guys care whether something is "high culture" or not- it just kind of comes off like you're wanting approval for your tastes. Just have the confidence to like what you like and talk and argue about it- that's little different from what art academics themse...
