Shinji killing himself would be like Tolkien using eagles to fly Frodo to Mount Doom. It "makes sense" in a broad way, but is also obvious, boring, lazy, and dramatically inert. So no, Anno's not gonna spend four films and years of his life just to build to THAT, folks.

Subtitles are for literal translations. Dubs should play around with things more. I remain a fan of almost all the English swearing, going back to the original. "So fucking what if I'm not you!?" is the appropriate reaction to EoE!Shinji.
