The only reasons I think it's a possibility is because 1) according to the CI, it is a living thing with its own will, and 2) the groaning lasts during the lance's travel through orbit.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that instrumentality was in Shini's hands. Rei gave some heavy hints, and he decided against it. Yuo wasn't really there.

I was kinda dissapointed when Misato gave Shinji that really long inspirational pep talk- and he did nothing.

Granted, he probably COULD'NT do anything, but still. Kinda weird.
