Someone has begun an expensive habit It's started with a Laphroaig QC two months ago, then grew to a Yamazaki 12 year old last month, and now these two for this month Laphroaig 10 GlenDronach Revival Two very different bottles. Dammit. This will get expensive fast. Also on the list for today: Su...

Am I the only one who scans these threads looking for self-mentions? Or am I just weird? -o-; There've been too many terrible ones anyway. And most of the terrible ones I know of are long forgotten. Even by me. Some of which are even on my favourites list from back when I first joined FFN and di...

Speaking of that computer that I saw earlier, how hard is it to build a computer from just the parts? How much does one need to know, in you guys' opinion? Reasonably easy if you take your time and do your research and pick the right parts to match what you want to actually achieve. Only thing ...

Riding unusually high at the moment. Have a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask waiting for a con at the end of the month. Have plenty of money in my bank account. Am doing fine at a new job and getting paid for working for once is nice... A project in work is going extremely well, despite the best eff...

It seems to live....

I plugged it in a powered it on to get a look at the BIOS.

And it just went ahead and booted itself to a Xubuntu install that was on one of the disk drives I stuck into it.

I dismantled what it was replacing last night, stripping it for parts like drives.

In the process, I found what killed it. I don't think there should be scorching around the GPU. Neither should it smell like coal and flake a bit.

Remember the recent iOS security bug? And now, in GNU ! [url]http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/03/critical-crypto-bug-leaves-linux-hundreds-of-apps-open-to-eavesdropping/ I'm not saying open source is a bad thing, but it certainly isn't looking effective either! Huh? Because one single m...

I'm confused. Far as I can tell registration for 2014 hasn't even opened yet, so how is it too late? It's six months out, that should be plenty of time to make travel arrangements even when coming from abroad. There's more to going to a con than registering. Flights, hotel, time off...

Dunno..

You'll all go together when you go.

We get to watch because the prevailing winds will blow the fallout away, then take over the smouldering ruins. Ireland rules the world.

Seems to be a lot of Love/Hate going around, and very little in between. That's the sort of thing that tends to lead to an 'interesting experience', no matter what side you're on. Then again, I'm the sort of person who adds shards of turf to a BBQ to give things a smokey flavour....

Dunno. Darwin award for dumbass diggers that don't pay attention. Seems fair.

As an aside, what 120kv will do to a gobshite who digs into it is a thing to see.

Laphroaig is never dumb - a very fine whisky. If you enjoy it, try the even smokier Lagavulin next. I amn't normally a whisky drinker - only rarely because it's quite expensive with all the taxes. So it promises to be an interesting thing alright. I'll have to use that shop more often, ...

Going to a con at the end of the month, with someone else agreeing to pay for the accommodation if I agreed to drive them down. Since there's a bit of disparity there in price I thought I'd bring something nice down with me. And not the usual bunch of cans, or bottle of jemmy . So I went to ...

If it's charred then it might've gotten hot enough to melt, wihich might suggest a more serious issue elsewhere in the motherboard.

Things tend not to char unless there's a short circuit somewhere.

Too late to book 2014 if coming from abroad.

Arguably probably too late to book 2015.

Not sure how comfortable I'd be at a massive con. I like the smaller events; they're more personal.
