this is a long post, so thanks for reading: In the TV Ending, Shinji comesto realize that his life has value, and that REALITY can be a good place if he wishes it to be. Yes, but what kind of reality? I argue that the "reality" Shinji accepts in TV ending is not a return to physical form, ...

But in the end, just like in EoTV, he turns back at the very brink when he realises that suicide is not the answer, and that "running away" solves nothing. If you accept that Complementation in both cases is essentially an allegory for Shinji's ultimate suicide attempt, then it become...

good find--

guess we'll never know how much guidance over the projects he had, but note that he is also referred to as the "creator" of Modern Love's on the Gainax website, which is probably just a bad translation, but meaning that the anime is ultimately his baby.

That kinda happens in both ending. The debate here is if the endings are the same or not in other words did he reject it at the last second and return to the real world. Ok, I'll turn it around: what shred of evidence is there in the TV ending that Shinji returns to the real world? I don't ...

Tines, I think that your interpretation of the TV ending (as I understand it: Instrumentality happens, Shinji experiences it in various ways throughout the last ep, and ultimately "transcends" instrumentality by breaking free of it, in a sense [although still not regaining corporeal fo...

It's basically up to you to prefer the TV ending (Shinji accepts instrumentality and decides to live inside it) Is there any substantial evidence that this is the case? (bochan_bird's argument hasn't been taken seriously by most for years.) I though this was the generall...

sailor star dust, to address your initial question: what did Anno and his crew intend-- short anser, we don't know. Gainax obviously ran out of money on the TV series, and decided to do a proper end to Eva trough the movies. That much is beyond dispute. It's basically up to you to prefer the...

Modern Love's Silliness was Anno directing adaptations of 3 different manga. Only Ebichu is well-known, largely because it has an anime-esque character (the hamster). I'm assuming the remaining stories are not life-changing, so unless you learn Japanese, you'll never truly experi...

Instrumentality in other sci-fi works?

In Eva, Seele wants to achieve the unification of mankind by merging all human minds into one sea of consciousness. I recall hearing that a similar idea was explored in a sci-fi novel by Asimov, Clark, or someone. Anyone know what that was? Also, are there are other films, books, or anime that explo...

This sounds pretty interesting-- I'm tinkering with a submission or two. Although I've had some novel ideas about Eva, I'm not sure any of them are substantial and interesting enough to sustain even a short article, but hey, we'll see. Perhaps Eva within the context of Gainax works t...

Fair enough, strike the "moe" from that sentence. I would argue, though, that the concept of moe, nebulous as it is anyway, predates the term by a few decades. I guess my point is more that Gainax is run by otaku, and they'll make self-indulgent otaku shows when they feel like it. Was...

yo, Gainax Pages is down because the server died. Can anyone recommend a good hosting service that's reliable and costs something reasonable? Is Gainax in a rut? Yes and no-- you're right that FLCL was the last truly great Gainax show (or debatably, anime show period), but they'v...

It's an interesting document. I believe that it's "true" insofar as the author is who he claims he is (an anime industry dropout) who believes his own opinions. Some points: Shinji is referred to as "autistic". "Eva [TV] ending was made under conditions with ...

[NGE] Different Third Impacts? Not in the manga.

as my latest thread in Eva Discussion made clear, there's still widespread confusion and debate over whether there's two types of Third Impact-- one by angels (humanity just dies), and one by humans (humanity evolves into one LCL sea of thought). It will never be resolved bec...

Different Third Impacts, huge plot hole?

OK. So, here is a plot hole that I defy even Reichu to solve: Fact: SEELE sends Kaworu because they want to cause Third Impact. Fact: SEELE thinks that mankind has evolved as far as it can with flesh bodies and wants to initiate Complementation. Fact: SEELE send Kaworu to cause Third Impact. This mu...

it seems like a re-release of the game with some new scenes and artwork by Gainax (I don't recall seeing those images of Shinji in the cockpit of the other mecha, and why else would Gainax be displaying them on their home page and the French review site?).

Yes, they are friends and Miyazaki was something of a mentor to Anno. One of Anno's first animator jobs was working on Nausicaa (he animated [some of? all of?] the scenes with the giant at the end).
