Re: FGC translation for Rebuilds?

A word on literal/accurate translations: Languages are not created in tandem where they can correlate 1:1. They are created by minds and cultures with concepts wholly unique to each. Translation is a misnomer: it is inherently an exercise in editorialising and adaptation. To apply this to Evangelion...

Re: I don't think NGE and EOE message entirely holds up in the modern day.

It is very much a language based split in the fandoms. The English speaking fandom translated a few things early on (with ever decreasing context) and some of those things became some of the immovable the cornerstone tenets, and every Eva discussion is a descendant of those early narratives. These n...

I believe Japanese doesn't really have the concept of plurals.

Re: I don't think NGE and EOE message entirely holds up in the modern day.

Despite what people say, this isn't "the message". Now I'm intrigued considering how often it is perpetuated as "The True Meaning Of Evangelion" and how Anno hates all the fans and the like. What would you consider the meaning? Evangelion is a very personal work driven by one ma...

Re: Mari is not afflicted with the “Curse of Eva”

Mari being a clone is totally unsupported for me because she's depicted as having too much memory and two-way familiarity with characters that a clone dumped with perfect recall of the original's life is unlike anything we've seen with Rei/Asuka. I think it's totally acceptable to think that she did...

Re: Does anyone feel that Rebuild had done Asuka dirty?

I have yet to see the final film for myself, although I feel as if Asuka hadn’t quite gotten some closure she needed or the happy ending that many fans, Miyamura included, had been hoping for. I think you might be feeling this because you haven't seen the final film which would have those things in...

Re: Have we found all the dates in the Rebuilds?

The weird thing to consider about calenders in anime, is that oftentimes they'll just reference whatever is in front of them at the time of production. This is why a bunch of NGE dates correlate with 1994-95 calendars, why 1.0 dates align with 2006-07, 2.0 dates with 2007-08, etc.

Re: Have we found all the dates in the Rebuilds?

I honestly think the dates are just supposed to be characters that resemble a date in instances where dates are unavoidable but are otherwise borderline random.

Re: Have we found all the dates in the Rebuilds?

To go further with the turntable, I did some brief research on railway turntables. They're pretty old, and stopped being made by the 80s - in fact the one that Village-3's was based on became a protected cultural object in the 80s - and was probably made early-mid 20th century. The other details bel...

Re: Have we found all the dates in the Rebuilds?

Speaking of the turntable, can someone re-translate the symbols around its "12001" (see picture in first post spoiler)? I don't remember if those have actually been translated as "built on", or if they instead indicate that "12001" is something besides a date. 12001 is...

Re: Is it reasonable to believe that people would blame Shinji for 3I?

In the 2.0 CRC, Tsurumaki explains that he had a hard time understanding Shinji refusing to re-pilot Eva-01 during the 10th Angel fight; he felt that him abandoning his friends and humanity in this way made him appear selfish and callous, so he asked Anno why Shinji would be doing this. Anno explain...

Re: Is it reasonable to believe that people would blame Shinji for 3I?

Speaking as someone who has been wanting to make an Evangelion 2.5 fanwork, I'm in a weird position of knowing as much as I can about this period while also allowing my headspace to stew in it, and I think it's worth restating and untangling some ideas here: -"Why is everybody being mean to Shi...

Re: Khara Q&A on 1st anniversary

It would have been rotoscoped because of the camera movements being difficult to regularly animate within. Same reason revolutions around characters/objects use CG. The aesthetic choice was gritty shakeycam, and heavy referencing is the only real way to do it without both characters melting all over...

Re: Anno: Rebuild as entertainment, mostly not what he wants to do

Can you link to such an interview? I can't find any mention of such a thing in any of the interviews I've found. Waiting until animation is at a screenable stage to decide it goes too far is incredibly wasteful, though it's been known to happen. Sorry for the confusion, it was actually from the ext...

Re: Mari’s “first time piloting Eva”

I don't have a JP script but I can play it by ear. Tech asks in english: "Pilot, please specify linguistic norm for cognitive functions." Mari replies: "Eto, hajimete nande nihongo de." Hyper literally, that's: "[Uhm], [first time] [why*] [Japanese] [in*]." Realisticall...

Someone says that the AT-fields are "resonating," and since Lilith is in control of the Impact (despite being a gestalt of Lilith/Rei/Adam/Kaworu) they seem to align with her appearance.

Re: Anno: Rebuild as entertainment, mostly not what he wants to do

I don't think he's speaking exclusively about NTE though. The implication from the thread is that NTE was somehow compromised and isn't "true Anno" somehow, when he's just making a general statement on his art philosophy of the last 20 years as opposed to his brief art movie phase 1997-2000.
