I thought that Kaworu was an angel and that angels had the mission statement of wiping out humanity. Were they not actually trying to destroy humanity? Were they simply destined to?

I'm not sure of Kaworu's motvation or his purpose in the story. I personally think he was malicious and was trying to manipulate Shinji, and his role in the story is to relay that unconditional love and kindness will never be handed to you, but I'm probably way off.
