Did anybody else notice a Utena angle to Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, or is it just me making that connection?

RahXephon was influenced more than a little by Evangelion, sure -- but every mech show since 1997 can be conceived of as being in dialogue with Evangelion. RahXephon is more interesting in the ways that it rejected Evangelion's influence than in the ways that it coincided with it, and taken as a...

I'm all for wacky hijinks shows (I'm currently watching Monster Musume, which is formulaic as hell but immensely enjoyable), but Durarara always felt like a more complex character-and-plot-driven show, with a lot more going on. Come for the wacky hijinks, stay for the existential ang...

It just feels pandering. The ratio of unexpected yet meaningful stuff to wacky craziness has gone way down, and the current plot is just a mirror of the main plot of the first season with the characters rotated. Like, in 12 episodes it'll be Anri's turn to run a gang, or something. There wer...

- Despite being up to its eyeballs in cliche, Heaven's Lost Property is a solid and entertaining show, and together with Rosario+Vampire is makes the point that we can aspire to a higher grade of crap when we are honest with ourselves about what we're making and we give it our all. Absolutel...

He's sweet, & a show-off. But also pretty needy.

He's a mix between siamese (seal point, I think) & mackerel tabby.

See, I heard that the live action movies are bad, but these movies have been on my radar way too long for me do simply not watch them. If I'm gonna be disappointed in these movies, then I'm gonna let the movies themselves to that for me, not some other person's opinion. It's not tha...

Semantics are the only thing worth arguing about. After all, the alternative is to argue about syntax. Edit: It occurs to me that perhaps I've been a bit oblique. I'm not calling Bebop a bad show, or saying that its quality had anything to do with the fact that it didn't spawn a whole ge...

A genre with one entry isn't a genre -- it's an outlier.

I need to read those guys but why do most some fans hate Cowboy Bebop and/or Samurai Champloo? I *love* Bebop (or did, last time I watched it). Why would a Marlowe fan hate it? I dunno, elitism? Unrelated complaints? A distain for all forms of neo-noir and sf-noir genre crossing, seen as an...

Dresden Files is actually a rip-off of the works of Raymond Chandler, the master of the detective novel. There's nothing original or revolutionary about it. Dresden is no Philip Marlowe, not by a long shot. I was actually grasping for Marlowe, but I blanked on the name. Spillane isn't as go...

Re: Parody vs Transcendence. Bl

Eva is trying to be more than just a work of fiction. I'm not really sure intent matters here. Many crappy shows have incredibly high aims. Even good/competent shows aim higher than being just a work of fiction and ultimately fail ('Bebop will become a genre unto itself' -- but the ...

I recall glancing at the manga and considering the art to be too frenetic/incompetent to be easy to follow in any kind of intense action sequence. (I had the same problem with the Trigun manga -- I paid like $20 for an omnibus and couldn't finish it because I couldn't tell what was going...

Well, there *is* a middle path (and its accessibility depends on what medium you're working in). That middle path is copious footnotes & translation notes. This used to be *somewhat* common in fansubs, back in that ancient era when 'sub vs dub' meant 'fansub of unlicensed...

I won't argue that Hellsing Ultimate is a good show. I'll only argue that it's way better than the original. Because it actually had content.

The original had exactly all the problems that Ultimate did, plus a bunch more.

With regard to 'Miss Misato' vs 'Misato-san' -- it's a mistake, I think. It doesn't mean the same thing or have the same significance. If someone *doesn't* know the meaning of '-san' in this context and what it indicates but instead takes it at face value, s/he is...

Re: Not seeing what was great anyway. Bl

I never really saw what was worthwhile about the shows in any case. I tried to enjoy them as lol!Japan, just yet another way they both misunderstand & reinterpret Christianity through a trashy, action-anime lense, but even that grew tedious as the powers made less and less sense, and it felt li...
