What is a "live-cd"?

Should I get rid of my Windows XP and upgrade to Fedora? And if I do upgrade, will it delete all of my anime and music on my computer, and will I still be able to use my wireless internet card?

Ornette, does that work for all file conversions? Because I want to convert my .mkv files so I can make a VCD with them.
