There were a lot of heroic moments even in the series: just accepting to pilot in episode 1 so an injured Rei wouldn't had to do it, or keeping his cool against Ramiel, his fight alongside Asuka underwater in episode 8, his "ballet duo" with her to defeat Israfel, jumping inside a fuc...

They didn't seem heroic, they were heroic. Steps to Heroism 1. Save the Girl 2. Figure that part out later 3. You're hero now. You're correct and I always felt it odd that people were so harsh on Shinji for the decision to save Rei. Then again, many Eva fans can't make up their mind...

A lot of it also revolves around how the show/Rebuild shows his successes. In both, with almost all of Shinji's victories they ultimately feel hollow. Shinji does not feel better about himself. Several times he is berated for his dumb actions. Or, many of the more "badass" moments feel...

I think a lot of it has to do with gender roles. In Western society we don't respect males who whine. In fact we question their manhood. A true male is supposed to possess confidence and spirit and even if he whines at first he will get over it and become a "true man" I think the reaso...

Everyone I introduce to Eva seems to hate Shinji

So I have introduced a variety of people to Evangelion. We usually end up watching the first Rebuild movie as its an easy one to watch in one sitting and its fairly close to the show. What I've noticed is that everyone I show it to seems to hate Shinji or complain about him whining too much auto...

I always chuckle and simultaneously look on in horror when I see an eva discussion dissolve into angry insults, much like how I watch EoE!

I think this question on Eva unit 02 brings up a deeper question. Was Kaworu even trying that hard to begin with, or was he mainly screwing around?

To be fair, quite a lot of the fight happens offscreen while Kaworu is figuring out that the being in front of him is Lilith not Adam. All we see is Eva unit 02 fallen to the ground with the progressive knife in its skull. I'd assume that Shinji stabbed it several times until it collapsed. We di...

@TheFriskyIan I didn't word what I said properly. I meant that Khara would release some sneak peek in Japan and then Funi would translate it and include it in Eva 3.33. Still you are right and I highly doubt that's the reason. "Unless, Funi plans to release it at some peak moment to get...

I'm really starting to wonder if there has been some licensing conflict we haven't heard about it. Perhaps those more versed in this topic can give their perspective but perhaps there is a different level of licensing when it comes to producing BD/DVDs than it is with showing the movie at a ...

He uses it to pay the expenses for his meth business. Evangelion is nothing more than a money laundering operation. His greatest cook is Shinji himself who has been trying to murder Anno for decades.

When I first watched it as a teenager, it depressed me quite a bit. Nowadays I either just watch it thoughtfully or I try to make as many dumb jokes as possible, especially during EOE.

To me, all the suffering in Evangelion was not cruel on Anno's part, but rather it was necessary to teach the main characters lessons. Shinji locked himself away, replaying pleasant moments in his life. He was like a child in a uterus refusing to be born, content to stay in the status quo. All t...

Evangelion 4.44 Dreams

So I had a dream that Eva 4.0 came out. It was a disaster. Mari was on the cover but wasn't in the movie at all, or explained in the slightest. It ended just like EOE, with a GNR, mind rape, and Shinji rejecting Instrumentality. The only difference was it was slightly more positive and the movie...

Late comment to this hilarious crapstorm. I thought the ending was sweet, especially the last scene with Shinji asking to hold Rei's hand. It was definitely an extremely positive ending. However, I found the memory reset to be...unsettling. EOE had a positive ending too, but it was tempered by t...

Well, to be fair, they're trying to market to non-Eva fans. People who are already fans and have seen the original don't need the be marketed to. I see the reasoning behind this definitely. Especially considering the fact that the original NGE series is largely out of print in the USA, so F...

I don't think he hates her as so much he finds the common ways fans relate to her character distasteful. I would definitely say he hates how Rei has become a sex symbol for the otaku generation.

I'd argue it's pretty subjective in the first place to define what a "mindfuck" is in the very first place. That being said, I wouldn't really call the original series a mindfuck. It had some surreal imagery, but the plot was fairly simple to follow. EoTV, without the context o...

Funi's advertising for Rebuild has sucked from day one. Remember how their Eva 1.0 trailer made the entire movie seem like one big action movie and acted like Gendo was some wise leader pushing Shinji onward with the line, "There are others like you. Others burdened with the task of protect...

I think pre Instrumentality Asuka and Shinji would not be a good match at all because they have very similar flaws but very different opinions and methods of dealing with their flaws. This is a typical problem in interpersonal communications. People who are the most similar often have the most diffi...
