Definitely "Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance." It's the best sci-fi film of this year so far. :)

I think Anno was trying to show us the dream like state that Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Yuri were in during Instrumentality. It's one of the most gorgeous moments in all of cinema. No words could describe it, and none of the characters even tried to explain what was going on. And that's the way...

If you want something that isn't anime, check out Hideaki Anno's "Love and Pop." Looking at the cover, you'll think it's just another cute tween popper film. Something like a Miley Cyrus flick or something. But it is SO MUCH MORE then that. It's the complete opposite of...

However, it's still entertainment But it's entertainment that is moving, inspiring, thoughtful, and provocative. Which is one of the many definitions of "art." So in the end, "NGE" is a great work of art and a life altering experience for many. To appreciate Evangelion, ...

Re: NGE's Status as a Work of Art...

NGE certainly succeeds in these areas, and I'm often surprised it's not appreciated more by the cinematic community given Anno's very real level of auteurism. It would, if 95% of animes didn't suck. I love the medium, it's my favorite medium, and many idiots like to judge it as ...

What I would call it, is the death blow of Mecha. A friend of mine called it that as well. He considers "Evangelion" to be the biggest "fuck you" to the mecha anime genre. The rest of the Mecha series are either medicore at best or just plain old terrible. I kinda disagree since...

Eva is still ahead of it's time IMO in characterization.

How it explores the characters minds was definitely ground breaking. And as of right now, nobody has given me names of other animes that did was "Evangelion" had done during the mid 90's.

I will have to disagree with you there. Take me for example, i've been into EVA for about 4 years, and i can shamelesly tell you that i'm quite popular in my highschool. There ain't one person over there that doesn't know my name. And i'm mostly out with friends at the mall or p...

I think where Evangelion was groundbreaking was in its incorporating of ideas and influences outside of anime that from then on became permanent fixtures in anime itself That's what I was thinking. What it takes from it's own medium isn't groundbreaking. It's what it takes from othe...

I would argue the reason for this is Evangelion attempted copycats of RaXephon, E7, etc., haven't been as successful, the same thing goes for what Squirrel Ninja said about those anime with "deep themes" and "mind fcuk endings" I meant the look of the mechas in "ReXepho...

there's another point that I forgot to mention, and that is the "look" of Evangelion Oh I know the look was ground breaking. No question about that. During my first viewing, my jaw dropped at the look and designs of the Evas. That was outstanding. And it's ironic that it hasn'...

because it was a deconstruction of those genres. I'd like to think it's a work of deconstructionism. But I mostly feel that "Evangelion" is more like an onion. You peel off one layer and another, to only find more layers. It's not as though Eva's making any one of these th...

um, where do we start? first of all, it is probably the most popular entertainment medium to have psychology overtly play a role in both the plot and theme I agree. But I think the existential themes are becoming pretty tedious in anime. It needs more variety at this point. I would even go a...

Obviously, you can say a lot for the technical and storytelling prowess of Eva, which seems to be what your doing if you want to talk about it next to 2001 or Citizen Kane. I think what Eva did though was simpler than that. Looking at it in the context of Japan, it took the Japanese otaku subcultur...

Is "Evangelion" truly ground breaking??

I was just wondering what makes "Evangelion" so ground breaking for it's time, and how it has made such an impact within the medium of anime. I know how it transcended it, and took it to another level. But I was wondering if there were other animes during the mid 90's that tried to...

Yeah, people just don't to see that side of them. People want to view characters that they can aspire to be, which isn't a bad thing. But in the end, most people would end up like Shinji, or would secretly like to be Shinji. I use to be like Shinji, and that's why I connected with him so...

The main issue with EVA is that a lot of the major plot points are taken from Space Runaway Ideon. No, certain imagery in "End of Evangelion" come from "Space Runaway Ideon." But the "kill them all syndrome" is something that was truly inspired by "Space Runaway I...
