What will the Western release be like? (Speculation)

From what I've seen, niche movies like this (in America) get either A. A road show where it shows in different cities during different weeks. B. A normal limited release where it opens in a few hundred theaters on the same day or C. A simulcast for only one or two showings at potentially thousands o...

It's not death. It's a glorious rebirth, for everyone! And that includes Shinji.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm biased because of my attachment to the old dub, so take what I say with a grain of salt: Spike's performance in EoE was phenomenal, whereas Casey's performance is just fine. It's not bad, or even mediocre. I have no problems with it (aside from the unconvincing screaming). It just didn't blow me...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

My long-held interpretation of End of Evangelion may have just been destroyed by the change of a single line. I saw the kitchen scene in pre-Instrumentality as Rei placing Shinji's soul together with Asuka's, with no AT field, so Shinji could see how she really felt before making a decision as to wh...

Why was Shinji separated from Unit 01? (Episode 20)

Shinji's experience in the Eva is a proto-Instrumentality, but we don't see him decide explicitly that he wants to live in the real world. All I'm certain of is the birthing metaphor when he's spat out. My headcanon is that it was an accidental, like waking up from a dream.

Re: The New Kids Are Weird

Evangelion hasn't helped me hate myself less or get along better with others, but it has made me feel much less alone. That is of no small significance. I'd go so far as to say that I now understand the desire to feel represented in media, because I feel represented by this show.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I am 16 episodes in now. The new Rei feels like a totally different character. I'm used to perceiving her as completely emotionless above a subconscious level. Here, she's quiet, but still very emotional. She's even, dare I say it, cute . I've always thought of her as more creepy than cute. I wonder...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I'm not because it looks regressive rather than progressive and the rumour that studio Khara were behind it only adds to the problem as Evangelion is loved by a lot of people because it questions gender roles, sex, sexuality and you can read in to underlying themes for LGBT in to it so for this to ...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm on episode 9. Asuka's line delivery is significantly less obnoxious in this dub than in the previous dub and, according to my extremely limited ability to understand foreign vocal intonation, the original Japanese audio. This makes Kensuke and Tojis' complaints about her come off as unnecessary,...

This is my biggest problem, and I'm surprised the Kaworu stuff is getting more attention.

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I have a friend who goes on Something Awful, and he shared with me a post that explains why the translation is so literal.

I intuit that maybe the reason the old dub wasn't included on Netflix is that it didn't adhere to Khara's new translation.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

The new Rei voice is really something. I'm used to Rei being emotionless, but I saw an official quote (maybe it was from Anno? This was years ago) that said something like Rei isn't emotionless, but she doesn't recognize that she has emotions. That's the exact feeling I'm getting from this performan...

Re: Netflix Release General Discussion

I notice they changed Toji saying "You know you're a real pain in the ass, don't ya?" to "You know you're a real slave to your passions, don't ya?" Is this version of the line more accurate? I do notice it has a double meaning, intentionally or otherwise. Yes, Kensuke is a slave ...

Putting no effort to replace it with something interesting is the sacrilege to me. Even just using a different song from the soundtrack in every episode would've been something.

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

Asuka's voice makes me uncomfortable. The performance is very good, so I wouldn't say I disagree with it as a casting decision, but she sounds so young that instead of being able to project myself onto her, I'm forced to look at her the way I would look at a child, which changes the way I enjoy the ...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm frankly flabbergasted that the response is so negative. This dub absolutely obliterates the old ADV dub, especially in the VAs for Shinji and Asuka, who actually sound like real characters, and not just cardboard exaggerations. There's so much more nuance in the new dub, characters have room to...

Re: Netflix English Dub Discussion

I'm glad that Shinji and Misato have VAs whose performances, from the very first episode, are wonderful. Both had great VAs in the original dub, but it took them awhile to get into character, and I wanted a dub that was good from the very beginning. I am very satisfied, but I do have one complaint. ...
