Obviously there is or was at some point. If nothing else, how does one reconcile the two pieces not being complimentary with them being part of a single home video release?

This was always part of the game, pretty much part of the normal storyline. Once you played through it, it would be accessible through the main menu.

That was just my point. The Blu-ray menu doesn't really go with that Evangelion "look" we're used to. Yes yes, I'm aware of the underwater imagery in Eva, but I'm speaking of overall design here.

Take a look at this one. There's quite a bit of cel shadow around Asuka which makes the picture look almost three-dimensional.
