I think it was noble of Rei to try to ease the estranged relationship between Shinji and his father, since she is someone they're both close too. And she comes off a better developed character in the process.

I see that funimation released clips of the 1.11 dub on their youtube channel. Ironically, none of them contain the new scenes.
