Recently I watched Rintaro's 1979 Galaxy Express 999 film for the first time, and I have to say it feels good to have found a Rintaro work, besides his great Neo-Tokyo segment, which I can love unreservedly! I've only seen a handful of his works, though: Metropolis (very messy in a numbe...

Thanks for this, Xard! Will start loading it now... Without wanting to clutter up the thread, this has reminded me: I found this bizarre short film Ryusei-Kacho, which Anno seems to have made at roundabout the same time as he was working on Cutie Honey: [url]http://www.wat.tv/video/ryusei-kacho-1lr3...

I have now just finished Graham Swift's Last Orders, and it merits another: WOW. "You sound like you're just round the corner, sweetheart..." Between this and his Waterland (now my favourite novel) a few weeks back, I have had perhaps the most wonderful reading session I...

Just finished Graham Swift's Waterland. Wow. This novel may well end up snatching the title of "Sean's favourite anything ever in the world ever". "And don't forget," my father would say, as if he expected me at any moment to up and leave to seek my fortune in the wid...

Scotland did not get in of course, but overall I think it is quite safe to say that Scots found that moment fairly hilarious

Yojimbo, it's refreshing to see that someone else shares my distaste for Me and You and Everyone We Know. The "goldfish on the roof of the car" scene is among the more obnoxious things I have seen in my life. In all fairness, I wonder whether perhaps the blame lies with me in this case...

Not much of a contribution at all, but having just finished the film, I simply must add my voice to the choir and say that Summer Wars is... amazing; simply amazing. An utter triumph. It's not often that a film is so good that it moves me to tears of sheer happiness, but Summer Wars has done jus...

I think Sono's use of the "detective mystery plot" could potentially have been rather an interesting approach had he focused solely on the detectives and their perceptions of "what was going down" / their inability to truly understand / etc., filtering things through their pe...

[...] I guess you haven't seen The Suicide Club yet, have you? (In case you haven't, go watch it now) There is a lot in Suicide Club which I like a great deal, but I tend to feel that while it works very well in parts (that early rooftop scene is wonderfully surreal, for a start...

Eva Yojimbo wrote:[...] too much repetition that adds very little to the film (such as the multiple scenes of Yui doing the ninja upskirt shots)

Too many panty shots?

A contradiction in terms, surely.

I really, really do not know what to make of Tsai's The Wayward Cloud... This is probably quite a personal thing, though. I love What Time is it There? a great deal, and I suppose what upsets me is the idea that:--- --- it is the very same characters from that melancholy and rather moving earlie...

Hmm, a wee while back I seem to remember that Manga UK posted on their Twitter page that they will indeed be releasing 1.11, and that they will be "fixing the Amazon/Play.com pages in due course" or something to that effect. I may be wrong, though... EDIT: from Manga UK's twitter page....

The sound seemed off to me. Really off, as though they were using only one small laptop speaker located in the next room. Then again, what can you expect - it was Glasgow after all (haw haw, very drole, very drole). I enjoyed it, but to be honest I felt that the image looked rather "ove...

Laputa: Catle in the Sky was his third film after the adaptation of his magnum opus manga, Nausicaa, and it's his first masterpiece. Hmm, I've always regarded his Lupin III film The Castle of Cagliostro as at least a minor masterpiece - a real gem - though admittedly it's possible that ...

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of high school English teachers' voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. For what it's worth, while it has been quite a while since I read them, I do remember very much enjoying Catcher in the Rye, Raise H...
