I didnt get satellite TV and thus Cartoon network till 2005. Before then, I was stuck with basic cable and rabbit ears.

The efforts to actually hack PS3 got real serious only after Sony disabled the OtherOS option. Also, hacking the current-gen consoles is a bit harder now that internet connectivity is serious part of the game and firmware updates are enforced that way. And signed content with revocable keys etc... ...

Hmm, I guess the European Discs I watched were region free. I've noticed that a lot of my discs dont even have a region marker on the cover.

It also helps that the PS3 is also a region free BD player. I've had NO trouble playing European BDs on my American PS3.

You dont need 7.1 yet. The current movies out now are a faux 7.1 where the 5.1 track just has two more speakers doubling the sound.
