Re: [Literature] Currently Reading (discussion)

I read so much with my job that my progress on personal reading depends on the difficulty of the book sometimes. Right now I'm working through Nabokov's Pale Fire, which is really engaging prose-wise and as something of an enigmatic text, but it's taking a while with how elusive its plot is. Rereadi...

Re: Anno is writing and directing a Godzilla movie

I'm a bigger Godzilla fan than an Evangelion fan (sorry, but it's true! Might be true for Anno, too...), but the torrent of cross-promotion between the franchises has reignited my interest in Eva as well. Happy to see people here are following Shin Gojira's release.

Actually, from what I've heard, 14 year old's in Japan are considered mature enough as an 18 years old here. Don't take my word for that though, but I think this theory is right. I think kids in foreign countries outside the US are more regarded as mature in a young age. Twenty is the t...

I'm not sure Anno is moralizing at all about Shinji's actions. A lot of people are jumping to this conclusion, but I think it's less about saying, "Shinji was wrong because _____" than it is about Shinji needing to continue to face the world in spite of things going horribly wr...

The consequences of what? Trying to rescue Rei from being digested? He tried to seek improvements at the end of 2.0. For ONE time in his life, he tried to do something on his own two feet to help a fellow human being. And he deserves to be punished for that? How does that work? You're saying he...

S hinji did something selfish and now he has to face the consequences. Even if he didn't know the rammifications, no matter how good your intentions, you still have to deal with it. There is no prize, you cannot run away, you cannot undo things and all that's left is to do is to try your be...

That's my hope. I'm reserving judgment until I see Final. It's as if the capstone or another major twist is missing. I can remember really hating Diebuster as it was coming out, but the ending pulled it all together for me and now I love it as much as Gunbuster. I'm hoping it will b...

I'm not sure the series endorses those views, really. Anno says some bizarre and bitter (also hilariously ironic) things in interviews, but his works themselves have more sympathy, I think. To me, the film is less about blaming Shinji than it is about showing that sometimes in life, even...

Pretty much the worse inclusion into the eva series by a distance. Every part of it was lazy and uninspired. Most of the charcaters make no sense, the plot makes no sense. This pales in comparison to the brilliant NGE and 4.0 wont touch EOE. Not looking forward to 4.0 in the slightest. Will be glad ...

I noticed that AAA Wunder was said to have "the power to kill Gods." I know the Japanese phrase can have a slightly different nuance, but when I googled the English... http://warriorprincess.wikia.com/wiki/Power_to_Kill_Gods Apparently it appears in Xena as well? The only reason I found th...

A bit, but they do make vehicles. See: Thunderbird 2, Batman's Tumbler, that Pixar Car, Toho Maser Tank, etc.

On an entirely different note (still about the topic of Shinji, Rei and Unit-01): Could it be that the first two times that Shinji hears Rei calling out to him (right before the Mark-09 breaks open the ship's hull) is NOT Rei 3.0 piloting it? What if it is Rei 2.0 from inside Un...

I hope someone releases a pre-painted Wunder of some kind. I'll take a Revoltech, a Robot Damashii, a Sega prize, or, hell, even a regular old vinyl figure. lol

Will likely be waiting on Damashii for Unit 08... not too keen on the other Evas from this film.

I think the OP made some good points. Right now I definitely wouldn't say I dislike the film, but as a standalone film it doesn't work as well as the last two in the rebuild. How well it functions as a part of the series will be determined by how its tensions resolve in the finale. But that ...

I feel better about the film after a second viewing. My central complaints still remain, but I think I just have the accept the project as deliberately alienating. We're supposed to experience the film through Shinji's perspective, which makes the whole thing feel like a strange nightmare of...

It felt like EoE. Not in the sense of "omg so dark and depressing, nothing makes sense, I'm so deep for liking this" sort of way but in the sense that, as the credits rolled, it seemed appropriate for a second half to begin. So when I say it's the weakest of the series, I don't...

I liked it, but it's undeniably the worst of the series as a film in and of itself. I have a feeling it will work better as an opening act for the final movie, but for now, I'm unsatisfied. Of course it's frustrating seeing so many characters radically changed in unpleasant ways, but I&#...

I have no idea what Hades Project Zeorymer is, but I've seen Godzilla and Gundam, and those do NOT have as much in common with Eva as Eva does with Pacific Rim. How do we know how much there is in common when none of us have seen the movie yet? Don't tell me you guys think a brief synopsis ...

^ Now that's a rare opinion. All Murakami fans that I know think Kafka on the Shore is one of his best and for me it's my favorite Murakami novel (heck it's one of my all time favorite novels). How come you prefer his other work to Kafka? It's mostly that I prefer his other ...

Oh boy.

One of my least favorites of his novels, but any Murakami is fantastic. :D
