It could be that Rei 2 is sterile in her human form but not in her Lillith form. In #23, Rei 2 hovers above the LCL, as if such things don't "touch" her.

There's one thing that supports the idea that it was Lillith (sp?) all along. She had always been bleeding, and not out of her side, if you know what I mean.

Lilith apparently got by without it. And it's not as if the Evas that lacks S^2s aren't alive.

I got the impression that Lillith was slowly dying without her core, and that her body was very slowly decaying into LCL.
