There's definitely a connection there, judging from the Instrumentality scenes. I can get behind a multiverse type thing, but the idea of it being one world looping over and over, and the resolution of the original series being rendered somewhat obselete as a result, is something I strongly dislike.

I want to read Shinji and Mari's interactions in the final scene as non-romantic, but I feel the implication is pretty clear.
